End-to-end encryption (E2EE) is designed so that only the devices participating in a conversation—not the messaging provider—can decrypt its content. But encryption depends on the particular chat, its participants, settings, and route. It does not automatically hide metadata, verify that a contact’s encryption key is genuine, protect an unlocked or compromised device, or secure every backup.

What end-to-end encryption means

When a message is end-to-end encrypted, it is protected on the sender’s device and can be decrypted by the intended recipient’s device. The service may carry and store encrypted data, but it is not supposed to hold the keys needed to read the message content. This is the important distinction between E2EE and encryption that protects data only while it travels between a device and a server: in the latter case, the service may still be able to access plaintext.

A simplified way to picture public-key encryption is a mailbox: a public key is like an address that others can use to send something, while a private key is like the key that opens the mailbox. Signal says a user’s private key stays on their device. That analogy leaves out important details: real messaging protocols combine multiple cryptographic operations and may update keys as a conversation continues.

How the protection works—and what it does not establish

Modern protocols can establish keys for a conversation and advance message keys over time. Signal describes forward secrecy as helping protect past messages from a later key compromise, and post-compromise security as helping protect future messages after a past compromise. In an October 2025 post, Signal described combining its existing Double Ratchet with its SPQR post-quantum ratchet, calling the result a Triple Ratchet. These are Signal’s protocol details, not a description of how every messaging app works.

E2EE protects content along a particular communication path; it is not a general guarantee that every part of a messaging service is private or secure. For example, it cannot prevent someone from reading messages on a device they can access while it is unlocked, or on a device that has been compromised. Nor does the label alone show whether a particular conversation is encrypted: the app, protocol, participants, settings, and any fallback route matter.

Are messages in every app and chat end-to-end encrypted?

No. A service’s capabilities can differ by conversation type, participant, and setting. The following examples reflect the cited companies’ documentation and announcements; they are not a neutral ranking of overall security.

Conversation or feature What the company says What to check
Google Messages RCS Google says one-to-one and group RCS chats can be E2EE when all participants use Google Messages with RCS enabled. Its support documentation says SMS/MMS are not E2EE. Look for the lock indicator in the conversation. Participant eligibility, app and device support, and RCS settings affect whether the chat qualifies.
RCS between iPhone and Android Apple’s May 11, 2026 announcement described a beta rollout of E2EE RCS for iPhones running iOS 26.5 on supported carriers and Android users on the latest Google Messages. The announcement describes a conditional beta, not universal availability. Check the live device, carrier, app, and conversation state; Apple says a lock icon indicates encrypted RCS.
iMessage Apple says iMessage content and attachments are E2EE and that Apple cannot decrypt them. Its technical explainer describes per-device message encryption and delivery through Apple Push Notification service (APNs). Apple’s technical explainer, dated 2022, says timestamps and APNs routing information are not encrypted. Do not treat content encryption as a claim that all metadata is hidden.
WhatsApp cloud backup WhatsApp says users can optionally protect cloud backups with a chosen password or a 64-digit key. It says WhatsApp and the backup provider cannot read a properly protected backup. Backup protection is a separate, optional setting; check whether it is enabled and keep the password or key recoverable.
Signal backup Signal’s September 28, 2026 update describes hosted and on-device E2EE backup choices with different security properties and recovery-key handling. The hosted option uses a supplemental daily rotating key and a recovery key; Signal says some disappearing messages are excluded. Review the option’s current details before relying on it.

How to tell whether a chat is encrypted

Check the conversation itself rather than inferring protection from an app’s name or from a general statement about its features. Google Messages documents a lock icon for an E2EE RCS chat; SMS/MMS fallback is not E2EE. Apple’s announcement says its supported encrypted cross-platform RCS conversations also display a lock icon. A missing or changed indicator is a reason to check the app’s explanation of that conversation’s status, not to assume that another protocol has the same protection.

Encryption also does not necessarily prove that the key belongs to the person you intended to message. E2EE can secure a message to a key even if an attacker has caused that key to be associated with the wrong name or number. That is why some services offer a separate key-verification step.

What key verification adds

Signal describes automatic key verification and key transparency as ways to make the association between a key and an identifier more consistent and to detect unexpected changes. Google Messages documents Key Verifier and code comparison for eligible RCS chats. Google says comparing codes is optional: eligible messages remain E2EE without that extra check. Verification can help detect a key or identity substitution; it does not protect a device after it is unlocked or compromised.

What E2EE does not hide

Encrypted content does not necessarily mean an anonymous conversation. A messaging service may still handle operational information needed to route, queue, or troubleshoot messages, and the details differ between products. Apple’s technical iMessage description specifically says timestamps and APNs routing information are not encrypted. That documented example should not be generalized to every service—or taken to mean that every service handles metadata in the same way.

  • It does not guarantee backup protection: a backup may have separate settings, keys, and recovery procedures.
  • It does not make every route in an app encrypted: a chat can use a different protocol or fall back to SMS/MMS.

Are backups encrypted too?

Do not assume a message’s E2EE status extends to every copy of that message. Backup protection is a separate layer with its own settings and recovery trade-offs. WhatsApp describes E2EE cloud-backup protection as optional and says it uses a password or 64-digit key. Signal’s September 28, 2026 update describes hosted and on-device backup choices with different protections; hosted backups use a supplemental daily rotating key as well as a recovery key, and some disappearing messages are excluded.

Before relying on a backup, check whether its protection is enabled, what credential is required to restore it, and what happens if that credential is lost. A strong backup design can still leave a user unable to recover data if required recovery credentials are unavailable.

A practical check before trusting a conversation

  1. Check the chat’s encryption indicator. Use the current status shown in that specific conversation, not the app’s general marketing or feature list.
  2. Confirm the route and participants. For Google Messages RCS, verify that all participants use Google Messages with RCS enabled; distinguish that chat from SMS/MMS. For cross-platform RCS, check whether the current carrier, software, and app combination is eligible.
  3. Use verification when identity assurance matters. If the app offers key comparison or another verification flow, understand what it checks and whether it is optional.
  4. Review backups separately. Check the backup setting, protection method, recovery credentials, and any exclusions that matter to you.
  5. Secure the devices themselves. E2EE relies on participant devices to display and decrypt messages, so device access controls and endpoint security remain important.

How to compare messaging apps without a misleading “most secure” label

There is no neutral, standardized cross-app score established by the cited materials. A useful comparison asks the same concrete questions of each service:

  • Is E2EE on by default, or does it require a separate setting?
  • Which participant, device, and protocol combinations qualify, and what happens on fallback?
  • How clearly does the app show that a particular conversation is encrypted?
  • Can users verify contact keys, and is verification optional?
  • What metadata does the service say it handles?
  • Do backups and transfers preserve E2EE, and what credentials are required for recovery?

Answers can change as apps, operating systems, carriers, and backup features change. Evaluate the conversation and backup you actually use rather than assuming a feature applies everywhere in an app.
