An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is an aircraft operated without a pilot aboard or direct human intervention from within or on the aircraft. The UAV is the aircraft itself; the broader system used to operate it is called an unmanned aircraft system (UAS).
What does UAV stand for?
UAV stands for unmanned aerial vehicle. It refers to the aircraft that flies without a pilot aboard. In U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) terminology, the aircraft is formally called an unmanned aircraft (UA). The FAA cites the statutory definition as an aircraft operated without the possibility of direct human intervention from within or on the aircraft. The FAA explains the distinction.
How is a UAV different from a UAS or a drone?
A UAV is the aircraft. A UAS, or unmanned aircraft system, is the aircraft together with the equipment and associated elements needed to operate it safely and efficiently, such as control stations and communication links. As the FAA puts it: “An unmanned aircraft system is an unmanned aircraft and the equipment necessary for the safe and efficient operation of that aircraft.”

Technical and regulatory documents may use UA, UAV, and UAS more precisely, so the surrounding context matters.

What kinds of aircraft can be UAVs?
UAVs are not limited to camera quadcopters. The term covers different aircraft configurations, including fixed-wing aircraft and rotorcraft such as multirotors. A quadcopter is one kind of UAV, not a synonym for the whole category. The FAA Safety Briefing discusses these uses of the term in “What’s in a Name?”
Does every uncrewed flying object count as a UAV?
Not necessarily. Whether an object fits a formal unmanned-aircraft definition depends on the governing definition and jurisdiction. The FAA glossary lists exclusions from its UA definition, including unmanned free balloons, moored balloons, tethered aircraft, gliders, and unmanned rockets. Does the definition mean you can fly one anywhere?
No. A definition identifies the aircraft or system; it does not grant permission to fly. In the United States, FAA guidance distinguishes many work or business operations under 14 CFR Part 107 from recreational operations under the limited statutory exception in 49 U.S.C. §44809. Requirements depend on the operation and can change, and U.S. rules do not automatically apply elsewhere. Check current guidance for your location and intended flight: the FAA provides information for recreational flyers and Part 107 operations.
