Validate an API payload in three separate passes: parse it with a JSON decoder, check its structure against the endpoint’s schema, then enforce the endpoint’s business rules. A successful parse proves only that a parser accepted the text; it does not prove the data is complete, authorized, safe to use, or valid for the operation.
What JSON validation must establish
“Valid JSON” can mean three different things during API debugging. Keeping the checks separate helps pinpoint whether a failure comes from malformed text, a contract mismatch, or an application rule.
- Syntax: Can a standard JSON parser decode the response text?
- Structure: Does the decoded value match the endpoint’s documented fields, types, and constraints?
- Semantics: Are the values appropriate for this request, user, and current application state?
JSON syntax is defined by RFC 8259. An endpoint’s API contract—not the fact that the body parses—determines whether a particular JSON value is an acceptable response.
Use a safe debugging workflow
1. Inspect the response before parsing
Capture the HTTP status, response headers, body bytes or text, and any transport or decompression error. Check the content type: RFC 8259 registers application/json, but APIs may use other documented media types. Do not assume every error response is JSON, or that a JSON-looking body is the endpoint’s success response. An HTML proxy error, empty body, or truncated response can explain a decoder failure.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Parse with a JSON decoder—never eval
Use the language’s standard JSON parser and retain its error and location information. Keep a copy of the raw response in a suitable debugging environment so you can compare the original text with the decoded value. Never parse an API body by passing it to JavaScript eval or an equivalent facility. RFC 8259 warns that executable code embedded in JSON-like text could create an unacceptable security risk.
3. Check parser edge cases
Different parsers may accept, reject, or interpret edge cases differently. RFC 8259 says object member names SHOULD be unique, but receiver behavior for duplicate names is unpredictable. If clients disagree about a response, inspect duplicate keys, non-standard numeric constants such as NaN and Infinity, byte-order marks, encoding, number range or precision, and parser limits.

For JSON exchanged outside a closed ecosystem, RFC 8259 specifies UTF-8. It also allows parsers to impose limits on input size, nesting depth, number range and precision, and string length. A response accepted by one implementation may therefore fail or behave differently in another.
4. Validate the decoded value against the API contract
Use the schema dialect declared by the API or its OpenAPI description, and confirm that your validator supports it. Check required properties, types, allowed or unexpected properties, array items, string constraints, and numeric ranges. The UK National Cyber Security Centre recommends validating API inputs against a schema and checking for unexpected key-value pairs in its input-validation guidance.

A schema validates only the constraints it expresses. It cannot, by itself, establish that a caller is authorized to use an identifier or that a state change is permitted. The JSON Schema Validation 2020-12 document, published in June 2022 as an Internet-Draft, describes instance assertions and validation considerations; check your implementation’s supported dialect rather than assuming all validators behave identically.
5. Enforce endpoint-specific rules and use values safely
Apply business checks in application code: confirm identifiers refer to permitted resources, state transitions are allowed, cross-field relationships make sense, and choices come from the endpoint’s allow-list. Then encode or escape values for the context where they will be used. Parsing JSON is not output encoding and does not, by itself, prevent injection.

Bound the size and nesting of untrusted bodies, and treat schema processing as work that can consume resources. In particular, JSON Schema regular-expression patterns can trigger denial of service through catastrophic backtracking. Review patterns and runtime behavior when validation is unexpectedly slow; limits and regex behavior can vary by implementation.
6. Interpret error bodies together with HTTP status
Use the status code and the body as a pair. RFC 7807 Problem Details for HTTP APIs defines a format that can include machine-readable error details, but it dates from 2016 and does not mean a particular service implements that format. When present, inspect fields such as the problem type and detail alongside the HTTP status; follow the API’s documented error contract if it differs.

Troubleshoot by the failure you see
| Symptom | Likely layer | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Decoder reports an error at a character or offset | Syntax, truncation, or unexpected response | Preserve the raw body. Check for an HTML or proxy error, an empty or truncated response, malformed quoting or commas, and encoding problems. |
| One client accepts a response while another rejects or changes it | Parser permissiveness or interoperability | Check duplicate names, non-standard values such as NaN or Infinity, byte-order marks, encoding, numeric range or precision, and implementation limits. |
| Parsing succeeds, but client code fails later | Schema, type, or semantic mismatch | Check required fields, types, ranges, additional fields, enum values, and cross-field or business rules. |
| Validation is unusually slow | Input size, nesting, or schema regex | Bound input size and depth; inspect regular expressions for expensive backtracking and account for validator runtime behavior. |
| An error body parses but explains little | HTTP error contract | Read the status and body together. Check whether the API documents RFC 7807 or another error schema. |
Python example: reject duplicate keys and non-standard constants
Python 3.14.8’s standard-library json decoder accepts Infinity, -Infinity, and NaN by default, and keeps only the last value for a repeated object name. The following example uses documented hooks to reject those cases rather than silently accepting or discarding them.
import json
def reject_constant(value):
raise ValueError(f"Non-standard JSON constant: {value}")
def reject_duplicate_keys(pairs):
result = {}
for key, value in pairs:
if key in result:
raise ValueError(f"Duplicate JSON object name: {key!r}")
result[key] = value
return result
try:
payload = json.loads(
response_text,
parse_constant=reject_constant,
object_pairs_hook=reject_duplicate_keys,
)
except (json.JSONDecodeError, ValueError) as exc:
print(f"Invalid or non-interoperable JSON: {exc}")
else:
# Next: validate payload against this endpoint's schema,
# then apply authorization and business-rule checks.
pass
This example addresses those two parser edge cases only. It is not schema validation, a substitute for limits on untrusted input, or proof that the parsed values are appropriate for the API operation. Python documents these decoder behaviors and hooks in its 3.14.8 json module documentation.
Debug the schema and tooling boundary too
OpenAPI descriptions can feed code generators, documentation systems, routers, and API test tools. Treat an untrusted API description as input to those downstream tools, not as harmless prose; the OpenAPI Initiative’s security considerations discuss this broader processing surface. For an ordinary response-debugging session, use the API’s trusted, versioned contract where possible and distinguish errors in the response from errors introduced by the schema or validator you are using.
