“Massively multiuser online” most likely means massively multiplayer online, usually shortened to MMO: an online game in which large numbers of players interact in a shared virtual world. Many MMOs use persistent worlds that continue to change while an individual player is offline, but there is no single player-count cutoff that applies to every game.
What is an MMO?
An MMO is a videogame built around large-scale online interaction among players in a shared world. A useful distinction from a typical online match is that players may inhabit the same ongoing game environment rather than only joining a discrete round or session. Many such worlds are persistent: the world and its activities can continue while a particular player is away.
The Office québécois de la langue française describes an MMO as a real-time online game in which thousands of players around the world can participate simultaneously, with a virtual world that evolves as players connect to the game server. Its terminology entry also notes that players may return to find the world changed. The Science Fiction Encyclopedia, updated June 2, 2026, uses a broader qualitative definition: a videogame in which large numbers of players interact in a persistent online world.
How many players make a game “massively multiplayer”?
There is no universal numerical threshold established by these definitions. The Office québécois de la langue française’s terminology entry says a persistent-world game with fewer than 32 players is not considered massively multiplayer in its guidance, and reports that player counts can range from 100 to 25,000 simultaneously depending on the server. Those figures belong to that terminology entry, last updated in 2011; they should not be treated as a current industry-wide rule. The newer Science Fiction Encyclopedia definition does not set a number.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
In practice, “massively” describes the scale and structure of player interaction, not a guaranteed count that every game must meet. A game’s audience, server design and the number of people online at once can vary.
What is the difference between an MMO and an MMORPG?
MMO is the broader category. An MMORPG is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game: it combines the shared online world of an MMO with role-playing features, especially developing a character over time. Lin and Sun describe MMORPGs as more than conventional PC or console role-playing games simply moved online; they are vivid virtual worlds where players share parts of daily life while taking part in game activities.

Not every MMO is a role-playing game. The Science Fiction Encyclopedia points to EVE Online as a space-simulation example and PlanetSide as a first-person-shooter example. These illustrate the range of genres that can use an MMO structure; they are not a complete classification.
Why persistent MMO worlds matter
A persistent world can make an MMO feel like a place players return to, rather than a series of isolated matches. Players may meet others, take part in shared activities and build social routines alongside the game’s objectives. Lin and Sun emphasize this social life and virtual-world culture as part of MMORPGs’ significance, beyond character statistics or simply being online.

Persistence also depends on real infrastructure and communities. In a 2024 peer-reviewed conference paper, Florence Smith Nicholls and Michael Cook discuss how MMOs grew in the late 1990s and 2000s and how their persistent worlds attracted ethnographic study. They also point out that persistence is fragile: continued access can depend on server infrastructure and sustained communities.

The Science Fiction Encyclopedia says “MMO” appears to have first been used to promote Meridian 59 (1996), while describing MMORPGs as the most common MMO variant. The wording is qualified because the available account does not establish an uncontested origin for the term.
