An “Invalid Partition Table” message means the computer could not boot from the device it tried—not, by itself, that your Windows partition table is damaged. First identify whether the PC is trying to start Windows from its internal drive or boot an installer or recovery USB. Then check the selected boot device and whether the firmware mode matches the disk’s partition style. Avoid deleting or reformatting partitions until you have protected any data you need.
What the error means—and what it does not prove
The message appears during startup, but it is not a diagnosis with one guaranteed cause. It can arise in different boot situations, including an attempt to start from removable media or a mismatch between the firmware mode and the disk or image being used. Older Microsoft technical guidance discusses it in connection with MBR corruption, but that does not establish that every PC showing the message has a corrupt partition table. Before changing settings, note the exact wording, when it appears, which device is selected to boot, and what changed recently. A firmware-mode change, disk clone, image deployment, newly connected drive, or USB recovery attempt can all help narrow the context.
Check which device the computer is trying to boot
If a USB drive or DVD is connected, the PC may be attempting to boot from it rather than from the installed Windows drive. Use the computer maker’s instructions to open its one-time boot menu or firmware setup; the key and menu labels vary by manufacturer and model.

- Starting Windows from the internal drive: Select the known Windows boot entry or internal drive in the one-time boot menu.
- Starting from installation or recovery media: Select the intended USB or DVD explicitly, and use the manufacturer’s instructions for firmware settings.
A Microsoft community response recommends checking boot sequence for a recovery-USB case, but that is case-specific advice—not proof that boot order is always the cause. If selecting the intended device does not help, continue to the firmware and partition-style check.
Match UEFI or legacy BIOS mode to the disk’s partition style
Windows boot mode and partition style must be compatible. Microsoft’s Windows Setup documentation on MBR and GPT states: “To boot your PC in UEFI mode, you’ll need to use a drive formatted using the GPT drive format.” The same document associates legacy BIOS compatibility mode with MBR.

This pairing is especially important if the error began after changing firmware settings, cloning a disk, or deploying a system image. A Broadcom Ghost Solution Suite support article describes a deployment-specific case involving an image and destination with incompatible GPT/MBR configurations. That example applies to its imaging context; it does not show that every “Invalid Partition Table” error comes from deployment.
Do not toggle firmware mode at random. Confirm how the existing Windows installation was set up before changing it. Microsoft’s setup instructions describe switching to legacy compatibility mode or using GPT for a particular Windows installation scenario; they are not a blanket instruction to change the mode of an existing installation that has stopped booting.

If the internal Windows drive will not start, try recovery tools first
Use Windows installation or recovery media to reach the Windows Recovery Environment, then try the available startup-repair option before making manual boot-record changes. Microsoft’s older boot troubleshooting article explains that Startup Repair attempts to fix common startup problems. It discusses bootrec /fixmbr specifically in the context of MBR corruption, not as a universal fix for every machine displaying this message. Check guidance for your Windows version and confirmed boot configuration before using command-line repairs.
If you need to create installation media to reach setup or recovery tools, Microsoft documents using USB key or DVD media. A blank USB flash drive can help with that task, but it does not itself repair or diagnose the internal drive’s partition table.

If the message appears while booting a USB installer or recovery drive
- Disconnect other removable drives so you can identify the intended boot device.
- Open the manufacturer’s one-time boot menu and select the installer or recovery USB explicitly.
- Check which firmware mode is being used to start the media, and whether that mode is appropriate for the installation or disk you intend to use.
- If you created the media for a specific deployment or installation workflow, verify that its image and target system are configured for compatible boot modes and partition styles.
Microsoft documents booting Windows Setup from USB or DVD, including starting the media in UEFI mode for its GPT installation workflow. Historical Q&A reports describe cases where changing between UEFI and legacy mode affected USB boot, but those user reports do not establish that every USB drive requires one particular mode.
Protect your files before destructive disk changes
Do not run diskpart clean, delete partitions, or reformat the drive as a diagnostic shortcut. Microsoft’s partition-style instructions warn that reformatting erases drive data. If a clean installation or conversion is your deliberate choice, first recover or back up needed files, confirm the target disk, and understand that deleting or reformatting partitions is destructive.
