A Trusted Platform Module (TPM) is a hardware security component that performs cryptographic operations and protects keys and other small amounts of sensitive data. It can also record measurements of a computer’s startup, allowing some security features to use protected keys only when the system starts in an expected state.
What does Trusted Platform Module mean?
TPM refers to both an industry-standard specification and a device that implements it. NIST defines a TPM as “A tamper-resistant integrated circuit built into some computer motherboards that can perform cryptographic operations (including key generation) and protect small amounts of sensitive information, such as passwords and cryptographic keys.” The NIST glossary attributes this definition to SP 800-147 and SP 800-147B. NIST’s TPM glossary provides the full entry.
In practical terms, the TPM is a protected place for certain security operations and data. It is not the whole security system, and it does not store all of a computer’s files or passwords.
How does a TPM work?
It creates and protects cryptographic keys
A TPM can generate and use cryptographic keys. A key can be configured so it cannot be exported from the TPM, helping keep it protected from software that might otherwise copy it. Windows and other platform software can use TPM capabilities for security features without exposing every protected key to ordinary applications.

It can record how the computer starts
During startup, firmware and operating-system boot code can be measured, with the measurements recorded in the TPM. These records can provide evidence about the platform’s boot state. Security software may use that evidence to make access to a TPM-protected key depend on whether startup matches an expected state. Microsoft describes these platform measurements and related capabilities in its TPM technology overview.
A TPM’s presence alone does not prove a computer is secure or guarantee that malware will be detected. The result depends on the platform’s integration and configuration; Microsoft notes that reliable measurement and reporting require close integration between the TPM and the platform. Where is the TPM in a computer?
A TPM may be a separate chip on the motherboard or functionality integrated into a processor or platform. Microsoft identifies Pluton as an integrated security processor that embeds TPM functionality. TPMs are also incorporated into some tablets and phones. The exact implementation depends on the device; a computer can provide TPM functionality without having a separate, user-visible module. Microsoft Support explains TPMs in Windows devices.
What do Windows PCs use a TPM for?
Windows can use TPM capabilities with features such as BitLocker drive encryption and Windows Hello. TPMs can also support authentication credentials, certificate keys, measured boot, and device-health evaluation. Windows 10 and Windows 11 generally initialize and take ownership of the TPM automatically, so most users do not need to configure it manually. TPM 1.2 vs. TPM 2.0
TPM 2.0 offers more flexibility in cryptographic algorithms than TPM 1.2, which allowed RSA and SHA-1. However, available algorithms can vary between TPM implementations, so a version number alone does not establish that every device supports the same algorithms or meets a particular security requirement. Microsoft’s recommendations describe these implementation differences.
The Trusted Computing Group maintains the TPM specifications. Its TPM 2.0 Library resource page lists Version 185, dated March 2026, with separate parts for the introduction, architecture, structures, and commands. The group identifies ISO/IEC 11889:2015 as the ISO/IEC publication of the TPM 2.0 specification. ISO’s catalog page for the 2009 Part 2 design-principles edition notes that a newer 2015 version exists; the 2009 edition should not be mistaken for the latest. ISO’s catalog entry describes that edition.

Do you need to install or buy a TPM?
Usually, no: many computers already provide TPM functionality, either through a discrete chip or an integrated platform implementation. If a system lacks the TPM functionality needed for a particular purpose, a separate module is an option only when the motherboard supports that specific module and connector.
- Check the exact motherboard manual for TPM support, connector type, and compatible module requirements.
- Confirm the TPM version and algorithm support required by your operating system or security policy.
- Consider whether the use case requires specific security assurance properties or regulatory compliance; implementations can differ.
Do not assume that a module that fits physically is compatible with a particular board. Microsoft’s TPM recommendations cover platform and implementation considerations.

- A TPM is a hardware security component standardized for cryptographic operations and protection of keys and small amounts of sensitive data.
- It can record startup measurements that platform software may use to control access to protected keys.
- It may be a discrete motherboard chip or integrated into a processor or platform.
- Windows can use TPM functionality for features such as BitLocker and Windows Hello, and typically initializes it automatically.
