A digital audio server is a computer, appliance, or software service that manages audio and makes it available to other devices or apps over a network. It is a role in a listening system—not a specific box: a computer, a NAS, or a dedicated music-server appliance can all provide server functions.
What is a digital audio server?
A digital audio server stores or manages digital audio files and shares them with compatible devices or applications on a network. In the UPnP standard, a MediaServer is a device role that provides audiovisual content to other UPnP devices on a home network. ISO’s UPnP MediaServer description defines that role; it does not require a particular type of hardware.
The name is used broadly in consumer audio. One server may mainly expose stored files, while another may also organize metadata, manage playback queues, analyze audio, or prepare playback. Those additional functions depend on the product and software; they are not inherent in every digital audio server.
How a server fits into a listening system
It helps to distinguish three jobs. Depending on the system, they may run on separate devices or be combined in one.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Server: manages or finds the library and makes audio available. Some systems also prepare or decode audio for playback.
- Controller: the app or device used to browse music, choose what to play, and control playback.
- Output or renderer: receives the audio and plays it, such as a network audio player or a computer connected to a DAC.
A typical arrangement might be: music files or a service → server software → network audio player or other output → DAC and amplifier → speakers. This is an example, not a required wiring plan. Roon, for example, treats server, control, and output as distinct roles that do not have to be three separate devices.
What can serve as a digital audio server?
The right implementation depends on the devices you already own, how you store music, and how much setup and library management you want to handle.

| Option | How it can serve audio | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Computer | Runs server software and may also be the controller or playback output. Roon lists Mac, Windows, Linux, NAS, and dedicated hardware as possible Roon Server hosts. Roon Labs, “Starting with Roon Server” | Confirm that the server software supports the computer and the intended playback devices. |
| NAS | Stores a music library and serves it to compatible network devices. Synology documents streaming media from its NAS to DLNA/UPnP-compliant devices. Synology Media Server | Check client compatibility and supported playback formats; the formats a device can play may vary by DLNA/UPnP client. |
| Dedicated music-server appliance | Purpose-built hardware may combine library tasks and network serving. Naim says its Uniti Core can rip CDs, organize a library, and stream to compatible devices via UPnP. Naim Uniti Core | Check which library, control, and playback functions the specific appliance provides and which devices it supports. |
Roon Labs describes Roon Server as “media server software that runs on a powerful computer, NAS, or turnkey appliance (like Nucleus or ROCK), located on the network within your home.” The statement comes from its “Starting with Roon Server” help page and describes Roon’s own software, not every audio server.
Do I need a music server for streaming?
Not necessarily. A separate server is useful when you want a shared library or server software to make music available to one or more compatible players. But the server role can run on a computer you already use, and some systems combine server, controller, and playback functions. A dedicated appliance or NAS is optional, not a universal requirement.

Before choosing hardware, check whether it supports your music library and playback devices, whether the storage must remain available whenever you want to listen, and how much setup and library management you are comfortable doing. There is no universal price, speed, sound-quality, or reliability ranking established for computers, NAS devices, and dedicated servers; compare specific systems against your needs.
Can I use a NAS as a music server?
Yes, if the NAS and playback device support a compatible way to share and play the audio. A NAS can hold the library and serve it over the network; DLNA/UPnP is one common approach. Synology’s documentation describes serving media to DLNA/UPnP-compliant devices, while noting that playback-format support can vary with the client.

UPnP/DLNA is not the only way to share network audio, and compatibility is more than simply connecting devices to the same network. Check that the server software can access the library and that the receiving player supports the formats you intend to play.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is the difference between a music server and a network streamer?
A music server makes a library or audio content available; a network streamer is typically the playback device that receives network audio and sends it to an audio system. A server may also prepare or decode playback, and some products combine roles, so the product name alone does not settle what a particular unit does. Check whether it stores or manages the library, serves content, controls playback, outputs audio, or performs several of those jobs.
