Cloud computing lets data scientists rent computing power, storage, databases, analytics, and machine-learning tools over the internet instead of operating the physical servers behind them. You can use it to store a dataset, explore and prepare it in a hosted notebook, run analysis or model training, and save the results. The trade-off is that convenience does not eliminate cost or security work: you still need to manage usage, identities, permissions, and data according to the service and your organization’s rules.

What cloud computing means for data science

A cloud provider operates data-center infrastructure and makes selected resources available over a network. Rather than buying and maintaining a server for every project, you can provision services when needed and pay according to each product’s billing terms. AWS describes its offering as “on-demand delivery of technology services through the Internet with pay-as-you-go pricing.” That is AWS’s description, not a guarantee that all services from every provider use identical billing rules. AWS’s cloud essentials overview outlines common categories such as compute, storage, databases, analytics, and networking.

For data science, these categories fit together: storage holds input data and outputs; compute runs code; notebooks provide an interactive workspace; and analytics or machine-learning services can support larger processing and model workflows. Services differ in how much setup and maintenance they leave to you.

How cloud services fit a basic data-science workflow

Consider a small project that explores a dataset and trains a model. The sequence below is illustrative, not a tested deployment recipe; the specific product, configuration, and controls depend on your use case.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Put the dataset in cloud storage. Choose a storage service and location that meet your access, governance, and data-handling requirements.
  2. Open a notebook or managed environment. A hosted notebook provides an interactive place to inspect data, write code, and prepare features. For example, Google Cloud lists Vertex AI Workbench instances with JupyterLab and common data-science and machine-learning frameworks.
  3. Run analysis or training on suitable compute. The resources needed depend on the code and workload. A managed machine-learning service is another option: Google Cloud describes Vertex AI as supporting training, hosting, and prediction.
  4. Save outputs and monitor use. Track the resources the project consumes and review relevant product pricing and cost-management tools as the work proceeds.
  5. Stop or remove resources no longer needed. Idle compute and retained data can continue to have cost or governance implications, depending on the service and its billing terms.

These Google Cloud products illustrate service categories; they are not recommendations or claims that one provider is superior. See Google Cloud’s comparison of AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud services for mappings across providers.

What IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS mean

These service-model labels describe, in broad terms, how much of the technology stack the provider manages. They are teaching categories: the actual boundary depends on the service and its configuration.

Model What you use What you generally manage
IaaS Rented infrastructure such as virtual machines, storage, and networking. More of the setup, including virtual machines, operating systems, and applications. This offers flexibility but leaves more operational and security work with you.
PaaS A managed platform for building or running applications. Your application and its use of the platform; you do not manage some underlying layers, such as virtual machines or operating systems. The precise division varies by service.
SaaS A finished online application. Your accounts, access, and the data you put into the application, even though the provider manages more of the technology stack.

Microsoft’s shared-responsibility guidance describes these distinctions and shows that duties vary by service model. Do not assume a label alone tells you every task you or the provider must perform.

  • Required capabilities: Check whether the provider offers suitable notebook, storage, database, analytics, and machine-learning services for your project.
  • Operational preference: Decide how much infrastructure you want to configure and maintain. More managed services can reduce some operational work, but their responsibility boundaries and features still need review.
  • Existing skills and tools: Your current experience, course materials, workplace systems, and integrations may make one environment easier to adopt.
  • Region and governance: Confirm that the services are available in permitted regions and fit your data-location, regulatory, security, and organizational requirements.
  • Actual workload cost: Estimate the compute, storage, analytics, and data-transfer use your project is likely to incur. Check the current regional prices, configuration, free-tier terms, and cost controls for the exact products you plan to use.

Google Cloud’s product pricing page lists product pricing and links to a calculator and cost-management tools; it is not a complete cost benchmark for your particular workload. AWS describes both pay-as-you-go use and commitment-based Savings Plans, but any comparison should use current prices and the actual configuration in your region. AWS Cloud Essentials provides its overview; consult each provider’s current product pricing for a like-for-like estimate. The available information does not establish a cheapest provider across workloads.

What remains your responsibility in the cloud

Moving a workload to the cloud does not transfer every security obligation to the provider. Providers generally operate the physical infrastructure, while customers remain responsible for their data and identities. The division of other duties depends on the service model and product.

AWS’s examples show why product-level detail matters: with EC2, customers manage the guest operating system and installed applications; with more abstracted services such as S3 and DynamoDB, AWS manages more of the underlying stack, while customers still manage data, classification, encryption choices, and permissions. Microsoft’s responsibility matrix also assigns customer-data and identity duties to customers across IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS. Google advises customers to account for regulatory requirements and data location.

  • Review the current responsibility documentation for each service you plan to use.
  • Configure identities and permissions so access matches the project’s needs.
  • Understand how the service handles your data, including applicable classification and encryption choices.
  • Check your organization’s policies and any regulatory or location requirements before uploading sensitive data.
