A wireless sensor network (WSN) is a group of spatially distributed devices that use sensors and wireless communication to collect and share information about physical or environmental conditions. A node may process a reading, pass it to another node, or send it to a gateway for delivery to external systems. Some WSNs also use readings to trigger control actions.

What is a wireless sensor network?

A WSN is a network arrangement built around distributed sensor nodes. Each node measures something in its surroundings and communicates its data wirelessly, either directly to a gateway or through other nodes. The network may be self-organizing, and it can support monitoring alone or monitoring combined with control. NIST’s 2015 summary of an IEC white paper describes these features and examples of WSN deployments: NIST: Wireless Sensor Networks and IoT.

The term does not specify a particular sensor, radio, network topology, gateway, or application. Those choices depend on what the system needs to measure, where it will operate, and how it must communicate. National Instruments’ version 15 overview describes several radio options and architecture choices: National Instruments: What Is a Wireless Sensor Network?.

How does a WSN work?

  1. Measure: A sensor detects a physical or environmental condition, such as temperature, vibration, or air quality.
  2. Process: The node may process the measurement locally before sending it.
  3. Transmit or relay: The node sends data wirelessly to a gateway, or passes it through one or more other nodes.
  4. Deliver and use: A gateway connects the wireless network to a backhaul, wired network, or external system where readings can be stored, analyzed, or used by an application.

Sensor nodes may have limited power, computing capacity, and communication capability; a sink or gateway can provide a connection to a backhaul. The exact design depends on the deployment.

What are the main components of a WSN?

  • Sensor nodes: Devices that contain sensing hardware and wireless communications. They may also perform local processing and relay data.
  • Gateway or sink: A point that collects network traffic and connects the wireless portion to external systems. Not every design must use the same gateway arrangement.
  • Backhaul and application systems: The wired or other external connection, plus the systems that receive, store, analyze, or act on sensor data.
  • Optional actuators: Components that carry out a control action, such as adjusting a thermostat, when the WSN is designed for control as well as monitoring.

Which WSN topologies are common?

Topology How data moves
Star Each node communicates directly with a gateway.
Cluster tree Data travels through higher-level nodes toward the gateway.
Mesh Nodes can pass data along available connections, allowing routes through multiple nodes.

A topology describes how nodes connect and route data; it does not by itself determine which radio standard the network uses.

What radios and protocols can a WSN use?

“Wireless sensor network” is not the name of a single wireless standard. National Instruments’ version 15 overview lists IEEE 802.15.4, IEEE 802.11 Wi-Fi, and proprietary radio options. The suitable choice depends on the application’s communication and power requirements. For example, a battery-powered design must account for how frequently the radio is used and the data rate: more frequent radio activity and higher data rates can consume more power.

Battery-operated nodes may periodically wake, transmit readings, and return to sleep to conserve energy. Actual lifetime cannot be inferred from the term WSN alone; it depends on the implementation, including the battery, transmission schedule, and radio behavior.

Where are wireless sensor networks used?

  • Environmental monitoring: Measuring conditions in air, water, and soil.
  • Buildings and infrastructure: Monitoring structures such as buildings and bridges.
  • Industry: Tracking machine condition and process measurements in factories.
  • Utilities: Supporting monitoring of electricity grids, streetlights, and water systems.
  • Other applications: Asset tracking, health care, field monitoring, and intelligent transportation.

Some systems use the readings to control equipment—for example, adjusting a thermostat or helping optimize a manufacturing process—rather than only displaying measurements.

What should be considered when designing a WSN?

  • Sensing needs: Select sensors suited to the quantity and environment being measured.
  • Coverage and routes: Choose a topology that fits node placement and the required paths for data.
  • Power: Account for battery capacity, transmission frequency, radio data rate, and sleep behavior.
  • Gateway and backhaul: Determine how readings will leave the wireless network and reach storage or applications.
  • Interoperability: Check whether devices and systems can exchange data in compatible formats and protocols. NIST’s 2010 summary of work on IEEE 1451.5 identifies data exchange, sharing, and interoperability as challenges, and describes standards as a way to address them: NIST: IEEE 1451.5 and Wireless Sensor Networks.
  • Monitoring or control: Decide whether the network only reports conditions or also needs to initiate actions.
