Effective AI coding-agent workflows depend on more than asking for code and checking the result. Design each cycle around three things: what starts the work, what evidence shows it succeeded, and what condition stops it. The six loops below form a practical engineering lifecycle; they are an editorial synthesis, not Anthropic’s official taxonomy. Anthropic names four operational loop types—turn-based, goal-based, time-based, and proactive—in its June 30, 2026 guide to loops.

What makes a coding-agent loop work?

A loop is a repeatable cycle in which an agent acts, receives or gathers feedback, and continues until it reaches a defined stop condition. “Run the agent again” is not enough: the workflow also needs a clear trigger, a visible way to judge progress, and a limit on when to stop.

For a coding task, that means being able to answer: What starts this work? What does done look like? Which check can show whether the change works? What happens if the check fails, or the agent reaches its retry limit? The more consequential the task, the more important it is to bound the cycle and route uncertain decisions to a person.

The six feedback loops in an AI coding workflow

1. Intent loop: turn the request into an inspectable goal

Give the agent a bounded task, relevant repository conventions, and explicit completion criteria. For example, “improve the settings page” is open-ended; a more inspectable goal names the setting, expected behavior, files or areas in scope, and a check that can confirm the behavior. Break larger requests into smaller deliverables when one success condition cannot cover them clearly.

OpenAI describes engineers shifting toward designing the environment, specifying intent, and building feedback loops in its account of using Codex in an agent-first workflow. Explicit intent also reduces the chance that an agent decides for itself that the result is “good enough.”

2. Implementation loop: act, inspect, and revise

Let the agent gather context, make a change, run relevant tools, inspect intermediate results, and revise as needed. A turn-based cycle—where a person prompts or guides each turn—often fits short, exploratory, or irregular tasks. A goal-based cycle can suit a larger task when it has a verifiable exit condition and a bounded number of attempts.

Match the workflow’s complexity to the task. A small, low-risk change may need a focused prompt and one test command; it does not automatically benefit from a large autonomous process. For more complex work, define milestones so a failure is easier to locate and correct.

3. Verification loop: make success observable

Provide checks the agent can actually run: a test suite, build, linter, browser, or screenshot comparison. A useful verification cycle is: run the relevant check, inspect the result, address failures, and rerun it. A successful edit is not proof that the behavior works.

For interface changes, a check might start the application, interact with the changed control, and inspect the browser console or a screenshot. Anthropic’s AI-native SDLC playbook describes runnable, quantifiable verification and concrete browser-based checks. The checks should cover the behavior the task actually requires, not merely whether code compiles.

4. Review loop: bring in an independent perspective

Use fresh-context review or human review when a change carries meaningful risk or requires judgment about intent. Review feedback should be actionable: identify the concern, point to evidence, and give the implementation cycle a clear next step. A separate reviewer context can be less anchored to the assumptions that shaped the original code.

OpenAI says its Codex workflow includes asking the agent to review changes, requesting additional agent reviews, responding to feedback, and iterating. These practices are examples, not proof that agent review alone is sufficient for every change. Use qualified human review where the stakes, ambiguity, or policy requirements call for it.

5. Evaluation loop: test the agent and its instructions over time

Prompts, repository guidance, skills, hooks, and model changes can all alter agent behavior. Keep evaluations that probe tasks the agent still struggles with, and regression evaluations that protect behaviors that already work. Anthropic distinguishes these capability and regression evaluation goals in its guide to evaluating AI agents.

Evaluation requires well-specified tasks, stable environments, and thorough tests. A passing test is useful evidence, but it does not capture every aspect of quality. Deterministic checks are reproducible and often inexpensive, but narrow rules can be brittle. Model graders can assess open-ended criteria, but their results are nondeterministic and should be calibrated against human judgments.

Review evaluators as carefully as generated code. A test can reject a valid solution if it encodes an overly narrow interpretation; Anthropic describes a booking-task evaluation where an agent used a policy loophole and the task failed as written. An evaluator should measure the intended behavior, not reward or punish an accidental interpretation of the test.

6. Production-learning loop: feed real outcomes into the next cycle

After deployment, use relevant outcomes—logs, metrics, traces, user reports, and review findings—to improve future tasks, checks, and instructions. OpenAI reports making application UI, logs, metrics, and traces available to Codex so it could reproduce bugs and validate fixes. Anthropic also points to production monitoring, A/B tests, and user research as signals for improving an agent.

This is an ongoing engineering practice, not a guarantee that an agent will improve itself. People still need to interpret signals, decide which changes are appropriate, and update the workflow.

Choose a trigger and stop condition that fit the work

Anthropic’s four operational loop types differ chiefly in what starts a cycle and how it stops. The best fit depends on how often relevant inputs change, how observable success is, the cost of a wrong action, and how much human review is needed.

Loop type Trigger Where it fits Stop condition and oversight
Turn-based A user prompt or instruction Short, exploratory, or irregular work where a person guides each turn The person ends or redirects the interaction; repeatable checks can still be encoded for the agent.
Goal-based A stated goal Work with success criteria the agent can verify Name the success check and cap turns or retries. Anthropic’s example asks for a homepage Lighthouse score of at least 90 and stops after five tries; it is an example, not a universal target.
Time-based A scheduled interval Recurring work or monitoring for changes, such as new pull-request comments or a CI failure Set an interval that matches how often relevant inputs change, and define when the routine should stop or wait for a person.
Proactive A recurring stream of work or an event that calls for action Well-defined, repeatable work such as triage or dependency updates Give each task a clear goal; route cases requiring human-level judgment to appropriate review.

Start with the simplest useful pattern, pilot it before running it at scale, and use scripts for deterministic work where they are more reliable. Account for token use and avoid routines that run more often than their inputs can meaningfully change.

What to measure—and what not to infer

Useful feedback depends on the question being asked. A test result can show whether a specific behavior passed; it cannot by itself establish that the code is secure, maintainable, or aligned with every user need. Evaluation tasks should be stable enough to compare changes, while still representing the work the agent is expected to do.

Vendor accounts can illustrate practices, but their numbers should stay attached to their original context. In its February 11, 2026 Codex harness-engineering account, OpenAI reported roughly 1,500 pull requests opened and merged over five months by a small team of three engineers, averaging 3.5 PRs per engineer per day; it also described a project reaching “on the order of a million lines of code” after five months. OpenAI estimated that a specific product experiment took “about 1/10th the time it would have taken to write the code by hand.” These are project-specific reports, not general productivity benchmarks or evidence that output volume equals quality.

Likewise, Anthropic’s January 9, 2026 eval article says LLMs “progressed from 40% to >80% on this eval in just one year,” referring to SWE-bench Verified in that article. That benchmark result does not directly predict a team’s coding outcomes.

Anthropic’s loop guidance is vendor-authored advice about Claude Code primitives; OpenAI’s account describes its own Codex workflow. Neither is independent comparative research establishing that one product or pattern works best in every engineering environment.
