Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHidden file extensions are filename suffixes that File Explorer does not display for known file types. The extension remains part of the filename; Windows is only hiding it from view. You can show extensions in File Explorer using a different setting in Windows 11 than in Windows 10.
What is a file extension?
A file extension is the suffix after the final period in a filename. In expenses.xlsx, for example, xlsx is the extension. Extensions help Windows identify a file type and the applications associated with it, but the suffix alone does not prove that the file’s contents match that type. Microsoft’s guide to common file extensions provides examples.
When extensions are hidden, File Explorer may display expenses instead of expenses.xlsx. The suffix has not been removed or changed; it is simply not shown in that view.
How to show file extensions
Use the steps for your version of Windows:
| Windows version | Steps in File Explorer |
|---|---|
| Windows 11 | Select View > Show > File name extensions. |
| Windows 10 | Select View > Options > Change folder and search options. On the View tab, clear Hide extensions for known file types, then select OK. |
These paths reflect Microsoft’s Windows file-extension guidance and File Explorer help.

Showing extensions is not the same as showing hidden files
File name extensions and hidden files are separate display settings. In Windows 11, File name extensions and Hidden items are separate options under View > Show. In Windows 10, Hide extensions for known file types is separate from Show hidden files, folders, and drives in the Folder Options dialog. Turning on extensions does not reveal hidden files or folders.
Does changing an extension convert a file?
No. Renaming a file from report.txt to report.docx changes its filename, not its underlying format. Microsoft explains: “You can change a file name extension, but that won’t convert the file to another format or change anything else about it except the file name.” Use an application’s export or Save As feature to create a file in another format.

Why are extensions hidden?
The setting controls what File Explorer displays, but Microsoft’s documentation does not establish why it is enabled on a particular computer. If you want to see the complete filenames and distinguish their suffixes, turn on file name extensions using the path for your Windows version above.
Displaying an extension can help you identify the filename’s stated type, but it is not a complete safety check: a visible suffix does not establish that a file is safe or that its contents match the extension. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; Microsoft says it no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10.
