React Grid Layout provides building blocks for dragging items within a layout and handling items dropped from outside it, but its documented APIs do not provide a turnkey system for moving items between separate grid instances or managing nested grids. For those features, treat each grid as part of an application-owned layout tree and coordinate transfers, nesting, and persistence in your own state.

Start by identifying your React Grid Layout version

The project documents two API generations. Its v2 release is a TypeScript rewrite with hooks and composable configuration such as gridConfig, dragConfig, and resizeConfig. The README recommends the /legacy entry point for existing v1 codebases that need runtime API compatibility. It lists v2 as compatible with React 18 and later, and versions from 0.17 as compatible with React 16 and 17.

Check the version installed in your project before adapting examples or wiring callbacks: imports, component props, and state APIs differ. Do not assume a v1 example applies unchanged to v2, or that a v2 hook is available through the legacy entry point.

What the library handles—and what it does not

In v2, the documented ReactGridLayout props include dropConfig, droppingItem, onDrop, and onDropDragOver. The useGridLayout hook also exposes onDropDragOver, onDropDragLeave, and onDrop, along with direct layout state. These APIs can help a layout respond to an item entering and being dropped into it.

The project implementation updates an item in the current layout during a drag and compacts that layout. That work is scoped to the layout being manipulated; it does not, by itself, remove an item from a different grid, coordinate multiple instances, or persist a tree of nested layouts. The official project material does not prescribe a canonical multi-level nested-grid architecture.

Choose the application model before wiring drag handlers

Give the application ownership of the layout tree

Represent grids as nodes with stable IDs, and record each item’s parent grid explicitly. Keep item IDs stable across React keys, layout records, and persisted data. A conceptual model might look like this:

This is an application data model, not a React Grid Layout type. Adapt the shape to your editor and include responsive layout variants if your app stores different arrangements at different breakpoints.

Decide whether a drop moves, clones, or reparents

A move should remove the item from the source and insert it into the destination as one logical state transition. Otherwise, an intermediate render or save can leave the item in neither grid or in both. A clone needs a new stable item ID; a reparent operation may preserve identity while changing the containing node. Decide what cancellation and undo mean before implementing the drop.

The project APIs are per-layout primitives, not a documented cross-grid transaction contract. Coordinating both layouts in application state is therefore an architectural recommendation, not a built-in guarantee.

Separate drag-time interaction from committed data

During a drag, track the dragged item, active destination, and pointer or preview state separately from the persisted layout tree. On drop, ask the destination to calculate a position in its own grid coordinates, then validate the item’s dimensions, bounds, collision rules, and any other constraints before committing the transfer.

Implement cross-instance drag and drop as a coordinated transfer

  1. Register the source. When dragging begins, retain the stable item ID, source grid ID, and the data needed to render or validate the item. Avoid relying on a temporary array index as identity.
  2. Identify the active destination. Use the destination layout’s documented drop callbacks where they fit your version, or use an application-level drag layer with explicit target registration. If the target is a grid instance, keep its grid ID available to the coordinator.
  3. Resolve destination coordinates. Convert the pointer position into the active grid’s coordinate system and calculate a candidate grid position. For nested grids, measure relative to the actual child container rather than treating the page or parent grid as the coordinate origin.
  4. Validate the candidate. Check bounds, item size, collisions, and destination-specific rules. Decide whether collisions push other items, reject the drop, or allow overlap; do not assume that another grid instance will inherit the source grid’s behavior.
  5. Commit once. In one parent-store update or reducer action, remove the item from the source, update its parent ID and destination position, and insert it into the destination. If validation fails, leave the committed tree unchanged.
  6. Apply packing and persistence rules. Decide whether the source compacts immediately and how the destination packs around the new item. Save the coordinated tree or use a versioned or transactional persistence strategy so a partial write cannot leave the grids inconsistent.

The library’s documented callbacks can participate in steps such as detecting and handling an external drop. The application still needs to coordinate which grid owns the item and what happens to the source layout.

Model multi-level nesting deliberately

Choose what a nested grid is

A common model is to make a child grid a parent-grid item that owns its own child layout. In that model, the parent controls the nested grid’s outer position and size; the child controls the positions of its own items. Each level has its own grid-space coordinates. This is a design choice for your application, not an officially prescribed React Grid Layout nesting pattern.

Define event boundaries between parents and children

A pointer over a nested child may also be inside its parent. If both handlers treat the same drop as theirs, one gesture can trigger multiple transfers. Establish a clear target-selection rule—for example, prefer the deepest eligible grid under the pointer—and ensure only the selected target commits the drop. Also define what dragging an item out of a child means: moving it to the parent, to a sibling grid, or out of the layout tree entirely.

Account for resizing and responsive layouts

Nested containers can change size as their parent moves, resizes, or switches breakpoint. Recalculate destination coordinates against the current child container and apply the destination’s active layout and constraints. If you persist responsive variants, define how a transfer affects each variant; a valid position at one breakpoint does not establish a valid position at another.

Compare implementation approaches

Decision Approach Trade-off
API generation v1-compatible /legacy entry point or v2 component and hooks Use the API that matches the installed release; do not mix assumptions about imports, props, or state.
State ownership Each grid manages itself, or a shared parent store coordinates the tree Independent ownership is simpler for isolated grids. A shared store makes cross-grid moves and coherent persistence easier to coordinate.
Drop handling Documented external-drop callbacks or an application-level shared drag layer Callbacks provide per-layout drop primitives; a shared layer can explicitly coordinate targets and transfers across instances.
Nesting One child level or an arbitrary-depth tree One level is simpler to reason about. Arbitrary depth needs explicit parent identity, target precedence, coordinate conversion, and recursive persistence.
Collision and compaction Push, reject, or permit overlap; compact source, destination, both, or neither Choose the policy per layout and apply it consistently after transfer. The implementation’s compaction of a layout during drag does not coordinate other instances.
Transfer semantics Move or clone, with defined cancellation and undo Moves require coordinated source removal and destination insertion; clones need distinct identity.
Responsive layouts and persistence Maintain per-breakpoint arrangements and save the complete tree coherently Destination sizing and persisted variants must remain consistent with the tree after a transfer.

Test the behaviors the APIs do not settle for you

Validate the implementation against the exact React Grid Layout release in your project. Include cases that exercise both ordinary drops and the boundaries between nested layouts:

  • Drop into an empty destination and into an occupied one.
  • Drag from a child grid to its parent, to a sibling, and out of the layout where applicable.
  • Drop where a parent and child are both under the pointer, confirming only the intended target handles it.
  • Cancel a drag and verify that the committed layout tree remains unchanged.
  • Resize a nested container or change breakpoints during or between interactions.
  • Reload persisted state and verify item identity, parent relationships, and each layout variant.

The official project issue asking about nested layouts and dragging between layouts shows that these are real integration questions, but an issue or discussion is not a guarantee of a supported nested architecture. Treat event routing, transfer atomicity, and multi-level coordinate handling as application responsibilities unless the documentation for your exact release establishes otherwise.
