Unlike RAM, which provides temporary working space for active tasks, persistent storage such as an SSD or HDD keeps data when the computer is switched off.
What a computer storage device does
Storage lets a computer keep information available beyond the moment it is being processed. That information can include the operating system, applications, documents, photos and other files. Storage may be installed inside a computer or connected as removable media.
Persistent storage retains data without power, but that does not mean it preserves data forever or protects it from device failure. A storage device is not automatically a backup.
Storage versus RAM
RAM is the computer’s temporary working space for information it is actively using. Persistent storage holds information for later retrieval, including after shutdown. The word “memory” is sometimes used broadly for storage, but RAM and an SSD or HDD have different roles.

Common types of computer storage devices
Solid-state drives (SSDs)
An SSD stores persistent data in solid-state memory, without the rotating platters used by a traditional hard drive. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) defines an SSD as “A storage device that uses solid-state memory to store persistent data” in its SSD glossary entry, attributed to NIST SP 800-88r2.

Hard disk drives (HDDs)
An HDD stores data on rotating platters and uses mechanical movement. It is another common type of computer storage drive. The mechanism differs from an SSD’s solid-state memory, although both serve as persistent storage.
Removable storage
Removable devices can be added to or removed from a computer or system. Examples include USB flash drives, memory cards, removable HDDs or SSDs, optical discs and tape. NIST’s portable storage device glossary entry lists these kinds of media. A computer needs a compatible port, drive or card reader to use a particular device.

How SSDs and HDDs differ
The distinction is both in how data is stored and in the physical mechanism. An SSD uses solid-state memory; an HDD uses rotating platters. Microsoft’s consumer overview of SSDs, HDDs and storage types describes SSDs broadly as smaller and faster than HDDs. Those generalizations do not guarantee that every SSD will outperform every HDD in every task: the particular drive, connection and workload matter.

Cloud storage is a service or arrangement for storing data on remote systems, not a physical device in the same sense as an SSD, HDD, flash drive or optical disc. A computer can access cloud-stored files over a network, while physical storage devices hold data on hardware connected to or installed in a system.
