Bodhi Linux is an Ubuntu-based Linux distribution built around a lean default application set and Moksha, its customizable desktop environment. It may suit a computer where a modest desktop is desirable, but the published hardware figures in Bodhi’s documentation are specifically for version 7.0.0—not a confirmed current release. The official pages referenced here do not establish which release is currently supported, so check the project’s download and release information before installing.
What is Bodhi Linux?
Bodhi Linux is a Linux operating system based on Ubuntu. Its project describes the approach as providing a functional, customizable, lightweight base system, rather than a large set of preinstalled applications. That description is the project’s design aim, not an independently measured performance claim. See Bodhi Linux’s overview.
The project’s release-cycle page describes Bodhi as semi-rolling and based on Ubuntu LTS. However, the dates shown there are outdated and do not establish present-day support coverage. Before relying on a particular version for a connected or work-critical computer, confirm its current security-update status in official release information: Bodhi Linux release cycle and official downloads.
What is the Moksha desktop?
Moksha is Bodhi’s default desktop environment. The project describes it as a continuation of the E17 environment, incorporating later Enlightenment features and ongoing work to maintain compatibility with EFL. Bodhi says Moksha is supported on Linux-based platforms, though Bodhi is its principal context in the material described here. The project’s page labels Moksha 0.4.1 as its latest release at the time that page was retrieved; that label should not be taken as a current version number without checking the page.

Moksha is intended to be customizable and lightweight. Whether its layout and workflow suit you is best judged by trying Bodhi’s live environment before committing to installation.
Is Bodhi Linux suitable for an old computer?
It could be worth evaluating on older hardware, but “lightweight” does not guarantee that a particular machine will run a current, supported Bodhi release well. Bodhi’s installation guide gives the following requirements for Bodhi 7.0.0 only:

- 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
- 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.

| Bodhi 7.0.0 requirement | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Processor | 500 MHz, 32-bit | 1.0 GHz, 64-bit |
| Memory | 512 MB RAM | 768 MB RAM |
| Drive space | 5 GB | 10 GB |
These figures are Bodhi Linux’s published Bodhi 7.0.0 requirements from 2023, not verified requirements for a current edition. The same guide cautions that the installer works slowly with 512 MB RAM and says 1 GB or more is ideal for installation. A machine meeting the minimum may therefore be a poor experience during setup, and these figures do not predict performance for every application or workload. Consult the installation guide and current release details before deciding.

| Image listed on the page | Description on the page | Listed approximate size |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | Standard 64-bit image | 1.3 GB |
| HWE | Hardware Enablement image | 1.3 GB |
| s76 | Image with a bleeding-edge kernel | 1.3 GB |
| App Pack | Image with additional applications | 2.3 GB |
| Legacy | 32-bit image identified as Bodhi 5.1.0 | not stated on the retrieved page |
These are listings and approximate sizes from Bodhi’s download page, not confirmation that those builds remain the latest. In choosing an image, check your processor architecture and hardware-support needs, then decide whether you prefer a lean base installation or a larger image with more applications already included. The page’s listed Standard ISO is about 1.3 GB; an 8 GB USB flash drive is a practical choice for installation media, not an official minimum-capacity requirement. Check Bodhi’s download page.
What software comes with Bodhi?
Bodhi 7.0’s overview lists Terminology, Chromium, Leafpad, ePhoto, Thunar, Synaptic, GNOME language selector, aRandr, Pavucontrol, and Web Browser Manager among the default applications. This is a version-specific list and may not match a later release. The project says applications can be added through apt, Synaptic, or AppCenter. See the Bodhi overview.

How to install Bodhi Linux from a USB drive
Bodhi’s installation guide recommends installing from USB. Preparing the drive erases its contents, so use a spare flash drive and copy any files you need somewhere safe first. The live environment lets you try the desktop before installing. The guide’s instructions and current download links are available at Bodhi Linux Installation Instructions.

- Check the current release and requirements. Visit Bodhi’s download page, verify which release and image are currently offered, and confirm that your computer’s architecture and hardware are supported. Do not assume the Bodhi 7.0.0 requirements above apply to another release.
- Download the appropriate image. Choose an edition based on the current page’s description and your hardware. The retrieved page listed Standard, HWE, s76, App Pack, and a 32-bit Legacy image; verify that the names and versions are still available.
- Prepare a spare USB drive. Follow the installation guide’s directions to write the downloaded image to the drive. This process erases the USB’s contents; do not use a drive containing files you want to keep.
- Boot the computer from USB and try the live environment. Use your computer’s boot-device selection process to start from the prepared drive. Try the desktop and check that basic hardware works before proceeding.
- Start the installer and choose the disk option carefully. Follow the installer prompts. If you choose an option that erases a drive, it deletes existing data on that drive. Back up important files and check the selected disk before confirming.
What to check before choosing Bodhi
- Support status: The official pages retrieved foreground Bodhi 7.0.0 and include outdated support dates. Confirm the current supported release and security updates rather than assuming a listed image is current.
- Hardware fit: Treat the published processor, memory, and storage figures as Bodhi 7.0.0-specific. Verify requirements for the release you intend to install.
- Desktop preference: Use the live environment to see whether Moksha’s interface and workflow fit your needs.
- Installation data safety: Keep a backup before installing, and use a USB drive whose contents can be erased.
