Control systems engineering is the discipline of modeling dynamic processes and designing controllers that make selected outputs stay near a desired value or follow a desired path. It underpins everything from a room thermostat to motor-speed regulation, aircraft altitude control and autonomous robots.

What does control systems engineering mean?

Control systems engineering combines process modeling with the design and implementation of controllers. Engineers identify how a process changes over time, decide what output should be regulated, and develop a control law and system structure that moves the output toward its target. The target may be a fixed value, called a set point, or a trajectory that changes over time. The University of Twente’s introductory text describes the field in these terms, including the study of signals and disturbances as part of controller design.

A control system connects a process to an action intended to influence that process. The process is often called the plant. A controlled variable is the output being regulated, such as room temperature, motor speed or water level. An actuator changes an input to the plant; a sensor provides information about the output.

What does a basic control loop contain?

In a feedback loop, a sensor measures the controlled variable and the controller compares that measurement with the set point. The difference is the error. The controller uses the error to determine a corrective action, and an actuator applies that action to the process. Disturbances—changes that affect the process but are not the intended control action—can push the output away from its target.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Set point: the desired value or trajectory.
  2. Process or plant: the system whose behavior is being controlled.
  3. Sensor: measures the controlled variable.
  4. Controller: uses the target and available measurements to decide how to act.
  5. Actuator: changes a process input to influence the output.
  6. Disturbance: an external or unplanned influence that can alter the output.

ASHRAE’s Handbook, Chapter 7, “Fundamentals of Control”, states: “Every closed loop must contain a sensor, a controller, and a controlled device that will affect the sensor reading(s).”

Thermostat example

For a room thermostat, room temperature is the controlled variable and the chosen temperature is the set point. The thermostat senses the room temperature, compares it with the target and signals the heating system to change its output. Outdoor temperature or an open door can act as a disturbance by changing the room’s heat loss.

How do open-loop, feedback and feedforward control differ?

Approach How it works Trade-off or use
Open-loop control Acts without measuring the output to correct its action. Can suit predictable processes with small disturbances; omitting a sensor and feedback path can reduce implementation cost. It cannot correct an output deviation it does not measure.
Feedback (closed-loop) control Measures the actual output and uses its difference from the target to make corrections. Can improve tracking, disturbance rejection and tolerance of model variation, but needs sensor information and can destabilize a system if poorly designed.
Feedforward control Uses measured or anticipated information about an input or disturbance to act before it causes output error. Depends on understanding the process relationship well enough to predict the effect. It can be combined with feedback.

The Open University illustrates feedforward with a rolling process: if incoming material thickness is monitored, roller pressure can be adjusted before that thickness change affects the result. Feedback reacts to an observed output deviation; feedforward acts on information about a likely cause before the deviation appears. Feedback is not automatically the better choice: the appropriate architecture depends on predictability, disturbance levels, sensor requirements, cost and stability.

Where is control systems engineering used?

Control engineering applies wherever a system’s behavior must be regulated or guided. Examples in university instructional materials include:

What do control engineers evaluate?

A controller is not judged only by whether it eventually reaches a target. Engineers evaluate how well it follows changing references, rejects disturbances and behaves while the output is moving toward its target. University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign course material frames control goals around tracking, disturbance rejection and meeting performance specifications; Texas course material also discusses steady-state error, stability and transient response.

  • Reference tracking: how closely and quickly the output follows the desired value or trajectory.
  • Disturbance rejection: how well the system limits the effect of external changes.
  • Steady-state error: the remaining difference between target and output after the response settles.
  • Stability: whether the system’s response remains controlled rather than growing or oscillating without settling.
  • Transient response: how the system behaves after a change, including its response time and any overshoot or oscillation.
  • Robustness: how well the design continues to work when the model differs from the real process.
  • Implementation demands: sensor information, actuator capability, cost and the effects of process delays or lags.

When comparing designs, assess them against the same criteria. A fast response, for example, is not useful if it makes the system unstable or highly sensitive to model error. Delays and lags matter because a corrective action may take time to show up in the measured output, which can affect how the controller should be designed.

How is control systems engineering different from general engineering?

Control systems engineering focuses on how to make a dynamic process produce a desired behavior over time. It draws on modeling, measurement, feedback and controller design. Other engineering disciplines may design the physical plant, sensor or actuator; control engineers consider how those pieces work together so that a specified output is regulated or follows a planned trajectory.

For a course-level treatment, a control systems engineering textbook can provide deeper study of feedback, system modeling, stability and controller design. University course materials from the University of Twente, The Open University, the University of Texas at Austin and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign also cover these topics.
