Choose Obsidian if you want notes stored as local plain-text files, dependable offline access, and control over files outside the app. Choose Notion if you want databases, structured pages, and collaboration in a hosted workspace. Notion now offers offline downloads, so the practical distinction is how each handles offline work—not that one has offline access and the other does not.
How to choose between Notion and Obsidian

Choose Obsidian for local files and linked notes
When Obsidian fits
- You want your core notes available on your device and usable without an internet connection.
- You prefer plain-text files that can be opened and managed outside Obsidian.
- Your system is built around links between notes rather than database properties and shared pages.
- You want to begin without creating an account or paying for the core app.
Obsidian says its notes are stored locally as non-proprietary plain-text files and that it does not collect telemetry. Those are vendor descriptions, not an independent security audit. Its optional Sync service is a separate product; Obsidian says Sync uses AES-256 end-to-end encryption.
When Obsidian may be less convenient
If you need shared databases and built-in collaboration as the center of your system, Notion’s workspace model is a more natural fit. Obsidian Sync and Publish are also separate paid services if you want the company’s optional syncing or publishing features.

Choose Notion for databases and a shared workspace
When Notion fits
- You want pages with structured properties, views, and databases rather than primarily file-based notes.
- You expect to organize information in a hosted workspace and collaborate with other people.
- You can work with Notion’s tier-specific offline model: selected pages on Free, and automatic downloads for Recents and Favourites on paid tiers, as described on its plan page.
Notion says workspaces can be exported as HTML, Markdown, and CSV. Exporting helps you take a copy of information out, but it is not equivalent to having the live workspace stored locally in plain-text files.
Understand the privacy distinction
Notion’s pricing page describes zero data retention with LLM providers for Enterprise workspaces using Notion AI and 30-day retention for lower tiers. These terms concern AI-provider retention as described by Notion; they do not establish end-to-end encryption for Notion as a whole or describe every aspect of its data handling.

Obsidian’s pricing page, checked October 4, 2026, says the core app is free without limits and does not require an account. It lists these optional services:

A practical decision checklist
- Choose Obsidian if local working files, offline-first access, and managing notes outside the app matter most.
- Choose Notion if databases, structured pages, and collaboration in a hosted workspace matter most.
- Check your offline routine. If you choose Notion, confirm that the pages you need are downloaded under your plan before relying on them offline.
- Consider how you would leave. Obsidian’s notes are working plain-text files; Notion offers workspace export. Those are different portability models.
- Compare the plan you will actually use. The core Obsidian app is free, while Sync and Publish cost extra; Notion’s feature set and limits depend on tier and region.

Can you export Notion to Markdown?
Notion says workspace export includes Markdown, as well as HTML and CSV. Exporting creates an export of the workspace; it does not change how the live workspace is hosted.
