Choose DigitalOcean Droplets if you want a configurable virtual machine and can manage its software stack; choose DigitalOcean App Platform if you want managed application hosting. Their advertised entry prices do not describe equivalent configurations, so compare the workload, management effort, and renewal cost—not just the first monthly figure.
Hostinger and DigitalOcean offer different kinds of hosting
Hostinger’s comparison is specifically about VPS hosting. DigitalOcean offers both self-managed Droplets—virtual machines you configure and maintain—and App Platform, its managed platform-as-a-service option. That distinction matters more than the brand names: a VPS gives you server resources, while a managed platform takes more of the underlying infrastructure work off your hands.
The figures below are provider-listed prices and configurations, not results from an independent performance test. Hostinger’s comparison is dated October 1, 2026; DigitalOcean’s hosting page was accessed October 4, 2026. Check each provider’s checkout terms for current pricing and availability.
How do the entry plans compare?
| Option | Listed entry price | Listed resources or allowance | Management model |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hostinger KVM 1 | $6.49/month introductory rate; renews at $11.99/month for two years. Prices exclude VAT. | 1 vCPU, 4 GB RAM, 50 GB NVMe storage, 4 TB bandwidth. | Packaged VPS plan. |
| DigitalOcean Droplet | From $4/month, according to DigitalOcean’s website-hosting page. | The comparison lists 1 vCPU, 512 MB RAM, and 10 GB NVMe storage for its entry configuration; bandwidth is not stated on the cited page. | Self-managed virtual machine. |
| DigitalOcean App Platform Basic | From $5/month, according to DigitalOcean’s website-hosting page. | Three static sites are available free on App Platform; the cited page does not state equivalent CPU, RAM, and disk figures for the Basic plan. | Managed application platform. |
The Hostinger and Droplet entry configurations shown are not equivalent: Hostinger lists substantially more RAM, storage, and bandwidth, while DigitalOcean’s lower Droplet starting price is for a smaller stated configuration. App Platform is a different kind of service, so its price should not be treated as a direct VPS comparison. Compare the configuration and services your application actually needs.

Which option suits your workload and skills?
Choose Hostinger VPS for a packaged server plan
Hostinger may suit a website owner who wants a VPS plan with its resources and provider-listed features grouped together. The plan page advertises weekly backups, a public API, and 1 Gbps network speed. Hostinger’s comparison also describes firewall management, malware scanning, and Hostinger Agent assistance. These are provider descriptions; they do not establish independent performance or security results.
Choose a DigitalOcean Droplet when you want server control
A Droplet is a customizable virtual machine suited to Linux applications. DigitalOcean says customers can scale by increasing resources or deploying multiple Droplets. This route makes sense when you need control over the server software and configuration and are prepared to install, secure, update, and troubleshoot that stack.

Choose DigitalOcean App Platform to avoid server administration
App Platform is DigitalOcean’s managed deployment option. It is the more relevant DigitalOcean choice when you want to deploy an application without maintaining the underlying virtual machine yourself. DigitalOcean lists three free static sites and a Basic plan from $5/month; check the service’s current terms to determine which features and usage are included for your project.
What should you compare beyond the advertised price?
- Renewal and billing term: Hostinger’s displayed KVM 1 introductory price is tied to a $11.99/month renewal for two years. Treat the introductory figure as a promotional rate, not the ongoing cost.
- Taxes: Hostinger says its displayed prices exclude VAT. Account for applicable taxes when comparing checkout totals.
- Resource fit: Match CPU, memory, storage, and bandwidth to your expected workload. A low starting price can represent a much smaller configuration.
- Included operations: Check which backup, firewall, malware-scanning, support, and management features are actually included in the plan you intend to buy. Provider feature descriptions are not independent tests.
- Administration time: A self-managed Droplet requires you to handle the server stack. A packaged VPS still involves server administration, whereas App Platform is designed to manage more of the infrastructure.
- Growth path: DigitalOcean describes a broader cloud offering that includes Kubernetes, object and block storage, and managed databases, in addition to scaling Droplets vertically or deploying multiple servers. Choose based on the services your application may need, not on the assumption that you will use every product.
Uptime and infrastructure claims need context
DigitalOcean states a 99.99% uptime SLA. That is the provider’s service-level commitment, not an independently measured uptime result or a guarantee that every application will experience that availability. Its hosting page says it has 14 globally distributed data centers. Hostinger’s comparison separately lists 15 data centers for DigitalOcean and 8 for Hostinger; the different DigitalOcean counts may reflect different definitions or page methodology, so they should not be treated as a reconciled, like-for-like count.

How to make the decision
- Decide who will manage the server. If you want a managed application platform, consider App Platform. If you need a virtual machine, compare Hostinger VPS and a Droplet according to how much configuration and maintenance you can handle.
- Write down the minimum workload requirements. Estimate the CPU, RAM, disk, and bandwidth your site or application needs, then compare plans with those requirements rather than comparing starting prices alone.
- Calculate the relevant cost period. Include the Hostinger renewal rate and billing term, applicable VAT, and any separately priced services you need. Confirm DigitalOcean’s current plan and usage charges before committing.
- Check the operational features you depend on. Confirm backup arrangements, firewall controls, support, and deployment requirements for the specific service and plan.
- Consider the next growth step. Decide whether you expect to increase one server’s resources, run multiple servers, or use managed databases or other cloud services.
