Choose Evernote if your work already revolves around notes and notebooks and desktop access to synced notes without an internet connection matters. Neither is a universal winner: test capture with your own websites, check plan limits against your archive and devices, and trial-import a representative notebook before moving a large collection.
How the two apps organize research
Notion: pages connected to databases
Notion suits a workflow in which saved sources are part of a wider system: a page can explain a project, while a database can track its references. Its Web Clipper can save a page to a chosen workspace page or database. When clipping to a database, it adds a URL property for the original address. Notion documents desktop extensions for Chrome and Safari. That gives you a way to route references into a structured collection, but it does not establish that every site will clip cleanly or that the clipper outperforms Evernote’s.
Evernote: notes and notebooks
Evernote’s familiar organizing units are notes and notebooks. Its current plan comparison lists Web Clipper, but the official material here does not establish comparative capture fidelity. If clipping quality is central to your decision, test both services on the kinds of pages you actually save rather than deciding from a feature list.
What to compare before choosing
- Organization: Do notebooks and notes fit your habits, or do you need pages and databases tailored to a research process?
- Capture: Where does a clipped page land, what metadata is retained, and how well does it work with your browser and sites?
- Offline access: Which notes or database entries must be available, on which devices, and in a browser or native app?
- Portability: How large is your archive, and do tags, dates, images, attachments, and export formats matter?
- Plan fit: Count your notes, notebooks, devices, collaboration needs, and any AI requirements, then check current regional pricing.
How offline access differs
Notion: download pages in the app
Notion offline pages require its desktop or mobile app; they are not available in a web browser. You can download pages individually. On paid plans, recently visited and favorited pages are downloaded automatically. A downloaded database, or a page containing one, includes the first 50 rows of its first view. Subpages do not download automatically with a parent. Notion also warns that non-text edits made by multiple people while offline can conflict. Evernote: desktop storage and mobile conditions
Evernote says synced notes and notebooks are stored locally on Mac and Windows desktop and remain available offline after you have signed in. On mobile, the app can show titles, tags, excerpts, and system information for browsing and search, but full note content has conditions: the note must have been created on that device, viewed recently, be available online, or be configured for offline use. Moving an Evernote archive into Notion
Notion’s import documentation says, “You can bring your Evernote notebooks into Notion and keep the same structure.” In practice, its documented flow asks you to sign in to Evernote, authorize the connection, select notebooks, and choose a destination. That structure is a useful starting point, not a guarantee of a flawless transfer. Notion says the importer is reliable up to approximately 5,000 notes. Larger imports may fail; there is no progress bar or status tracking, and Evernote rate limits can make the process take a long time. Images may need cleanup, dates may need attention, and Evernote Teams is not included.
- Keep a backup first. Export or otherwise retain a copy of important notes before importing.
- Test a representative notebook. Include notes with images, dates, tags, and other elements important to your workflow.
- Check the result. Review structure, images, and dates, and confirm that the imported material works for the way you plan to search and organize it.
- Scale up only after the test. Take the approximate 5,000-note reliability guidance and lack of progress tracking into account when deciding how much to import at once.
Exporting and keeping your notes portable
Notion exports
Notion lets users export pages and databases, and export a workspace as HTML or Markdown pages plus CSV for databases, with uploaded files. Permissions and teamspace settings can affect what is included. Notion cautions that an export cannot instantly recreate the workspace simply by uploading it again. Notion’s export guidance

Evernote exports
Evernote’s export instructions apply to the Mac or Windows desktop app, not Evernote Web. You can export notes as ENEX or HTML, either up to 100 selected notes at a time or whole notebooks; tags, dates, and author can be included as attributes. The help page was updated March 12, 2025. Both services provide export routes, but the formats and scope differ. If long-term access or later migration matters, export a sample and confirm that it contains the information you need before committing your only copy to either app.

Notion’s plan help describes Free, Plus, Business, and Enterprise, and says plan availability varies by workspace. It points readers to the live pricing page; the help material does not provide a stable price to quote here. Check Notion’s current pricing in your region rather than relying on an old figure. Notion AI for research tasks
Notion’s documentation says Research Mode is available on Business and Enterprise. Depending on enabled connectors and permissions, it can search Notion workspace content, connected apps, and the web, and produce reports for complex or open-ended questions.
