Follow with the applications you normally use. Any reported error means the configuration failed that test; a clean run is useful evidence, not a guarantee that every workload will be error-free.
What XMP and EXPO mean for stability
XMP and EXPO apply memory settings intended to run a compatible kit at its profiled speed and timings. Intel describes XMP as an overclocking feature for compatible DDR4 and DDR5 memory. AMD documents EXPO for DDR5 on Ryzen platforms and provides a list of memory kits tested across systems at their rated speed and latency. A profile does not guarantee stability for every combination of processor memory controller, motherboard, firmware, DIMM count, and slot arrangement. If compatibility is in doubt, check the documentation and memory support information for your exact motherboard and processor.
Intel cautions: “Altering clock frequency or voltage may void any product warranties and reduce stability, security, performance, and life of the processor and other components.” That is Intel’s warning; warranty effects depend on the applicable product terms and jurisdiction.
Test the settings you intend to use
- Record your configuration. Note the selected XMP or EXPO profile, reported memory data rate, number and arrangement of DIMMs, motherboard model, CPU, and firmware version. You will need these details to reproduce a result or compare settings.
- Run MemTest86 from USB. Create bootable media and start the PC from it. MemTest86 supports DDR5 and runs outside the installed operating system; its default settings begin testing automatically. Let the selected test set complete, then record the completed passes and any errors. PassMark says MemTest86 does not change BIOS settings. Do not confuse PassMark’s MemTest86 with the separate Memtest86+ project.
- Run OCCT’s memory test in the operating system. Set the test’s duration and memory coverage before starting it. This provides a complementary check in a different environment. Record the OCCT version and settings if you need to compare results later.
- Try the workloads that matter to you. Use your normal applications and watch for crashes, unexpected reboots, data errors, or application failures. These observations add useful coverage but do not replace the diagnostic tests.
How long should the tests run?
For a first check, complete MemTest86’s default run. PassMark documents four passes as its default and says one pass generally catches consistent errors; it advises longer testing when intermittent errors are suspected. Those figures describe MemTest86 guidance, not a universal DDR5 stability threshold. Runtime varies with CPU and memory speed, memory capacity, selected tests, and other configuration options, so there is no fixed number of hours that proves a system stable.

Use longer runs when you are investigating intermittent symptoms or the cost of a missed error is high. Apply the same principle to OCCT: choose duration and coverage based on your purpose, and treat the result as evidence from that particular test and configuration.
What a pass or error tells you
If a test reports an error
Treat the tested configuration as having failed that test. PassMark says most errors reported by MemTest86 are valid and known errors should be corrected, even when symptoms are not obvious. An error does not prove that a DIMM is defective: memory may fail only at higher settings, and a CPU, motherboard, firmware, or another system fault can also contribute.

Return to default JEDEC memory settings and repeat the comparison. Change one condition at a time. If defaults pass but the profile does not, the profile-and-system combination is not stable at that setting. Check current motherboard firmware and memory-support information; you can then try a less aggressive supported profile or keep defaults. Do not make arbitrary voltage increases: there is no universal safe adjustment established here.
If you need to narrow down the cause
Use the motherboard manual’s recommended slots and test modules individually if needed. PassMark notes that identifying a failing module is not always clear-cut: results can differ between DIMMs tested together and individually. A failure implicates the tested system configuration, but does not by itself identify the faulty component.

If all tests pass
A pass means that no error was found by that test with the coverage, duration, and settings used. It does not establish that every workload or intermittent condition is error-free. MemTest86 and OCCT examine the system in different environments; neither promises that a finite run guarantees stability.

Neither test replaces the other, and neither can guarantee stability under every possible workload. Together with normal-use observation and a default-settings comparison when errors occur, they help distinguish a profile-specific problem from a failure that persists at JEDEC defaults.
