Best Python books for beginners
Automate the Boring Stuff with Python by Al Sweigart
Choose this if a concrete project is more motivating than studying syntax in isolation. The book uses everyday tasks to introduce programming fundamentals, including working with files and spreadsheets, PDFs, email, web tasks, and application controls. The author says no previous programming experience is required and describes the current version as a fully revised third edition. You can read it free online at automatetheboringstuff.com; that page also links to print and ebook retailers.
Its project-first approach is especially useful if your goal is to make a repetitive computer task easier. It is less suited to someone whose immediate priority is a comprehensive language reference or performance tuning.
A Byte of Python by Swaroop C. H.
This is a straightforward option if you want a free introduction to Python 3 without first choosing a paid textbook. The author’s site provides online reading and downloadable PDF and EPUB formats, and also explains how to obtain a printed copy. Visit the author’s site for the available formats.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Consider it for a direct start with the language; choose a project-focused title instead if you learn best by building practical scripts as you go.
Think Python by Allen B. Downey
Think Python is a good fit if you want to understand programming ideas, not just collect Python recipes. It introduces programming through Python, emphasizing concepts and their connections. Green Tea Press lists a third edition as available at the current-edition page.

Books for deeper Python knowledge and application development
Learning Python by Mark Lutz
Choose Learning Python when you want a thorough tutorial and reference on the language rather than a short project sampler. The 2020 roundup discussed its fifth edition, but that edition has been superseded: the author’s edition page lists a sixth edition, published in February 2025, covering Python 3.12. See the author’s edition information for current details.

Its depth makes it a better match for readers prepared to spend time building a systematic understanding than for someone who only needs a quick first script.
Programming Python by Mark Lutz
Where Learning Python focuses on language foundations, Programming Python is oriented toward using Python to build applications. The 2020 roundup describes topics including system programming, GUIs, internet clients and servers, databases, and C integration. It identifies the fourth edition; a newer edition was not independently verified for this guide. The linked O’Reilly fourth-edition listing identifies that edition, so check its publication and availability details before purchase.

Books for idiomatic code and performance
Fluent Python by Luciano Ramalho
If you already know Python’s basics and want to write code that makes better use of the language, consider Fluent Python. The roundup identifies its second edition and highlights the data model, collections, functions, objects, and typing. Those subjects make it a natural next step for improving fluency and code quality, rather than a first book for someone who has never programmed. See the O’Reilly second-edition listing for the edition referenced here.
High Performance Python by Micha Gorelick and Ian Ozsvald
Pick this when the problem is not learning Python syntax but finding out why an existing program is slow or how to improve it. The roundup describes coverage of profiling, data-structure costs, generators, numerical tools, compilers and runtimes, asynchronous I/O, multiprocessing, and deployment. It mentions a second edition; whether that remains the latest edition was not verified. Check the O’Reilly second-edition listing for its current status.

Performance work should start with evidence about the program rather than assumptions about which technique is fastest. A book in this category is most useful once you can read and modify Python code and have a real workload to investigate.
How to choose the right book
- Start with your experience. If you are new to programming, begin with Automate the Boring Stuff, A Byte of Python, or Think Python. If you already write Python, look at Fluent Python or High Performance Python.
- Match the teaching style to your goal. Choose Automate the Boring Stuff for practical scripts, Think Python for conceptual foundations, and A Byte of Python for a concise free guide.
- Distinguish language depth from application examples. Learning Python is the deeper language tutorial/reference; Programming Python emphasizes applications and systems topics.
- Buy for the edition, not just the title. The edition references in older roundups can go stale. In particular, the sixth edition of Learning Python supersedes the fifth, while the author pages for Automate the Boring Stuff and Think Python identify third editions.
- Check free access before purchasing. Automate the Boring Stuff, A Byte of Python, and the second edition of Think Python have free online reading options; verify that the version and format meet your needs.
There is no single best title for every reader: the right choice is the one whose level, teaching approach, and subject match the task you want to tackle.
