To use less mobile data during a live game, connect to Wi-Fi if you can. If you need to stream over cellular, open the sports app’s settings before kickoff and turn on its data-saving mode, mobile data cap, or lower-quality option. These controls can reduce picture or audio quality, and there is no single reliable per-hour estimate for every live sports service.
Choose the control that fits your situation

Set the sports app to use less data
Look in the app’s account, settings, or playback menus for terms such as Data Saver, Data Capping, Save Data on 3G / 4G / LTE, or a video-quality selector. Set it before the game starts: some controls live outside the player and may not be easy to find during playback.
NBA app
In the NBA app, the documented path is Account icon → App Settings → Video Quality → Data Saver. The NBA says the app selects video quality based on the current download bandwidth of the internet connection. That statement describes the NBA app, not a setting shared by all sports services. DAZN
DAZN’s Japan help article describes Data Capping and a Save Data on 3G / 4G / LTE option. DAZN says enabling either reduces stream quality to reduce data use. The article estimates approximately 450 MB per hour with data capping enabled, while noting that actual use depends on viewing conditions. Treat this as DAZN Japan’s service-specific estimate, not a guaranteed allowance or a typical rate for other live sports apps. See DAZN’s data-use guidance for Japan.

Use Wi-Fi-only playback to avoid accidental cellular streaming
If you want to make sure a service does not play over cellular, use its Wi-Fi-only setting when available. Netflix documents a Wi-Fi Only option for mobile playback. It prevents cellular playback in Netflix; it does not lower the amount of data a cellular stream would use. Find the current instructions in Netflix’s mobile data-use guidance.
Understand what the per-hour figures can—and cannot—tell you
Data use depends on the specific service and its selected quality, settings, connection, device, and viewing conditions. The published figures below are useful for rough planning within those services, but they are not a comparison test and should not be used as a promise of how much a different sports app will consume.

Netflix and Disney+ figures describe their mobile settings; they are included as service-specific examples, not live-sports benchmarks. The available official guidance does not establish a universal live-game consumption rate.
Expect a quality trade-off
A data-saving setting commonly reduces video quality, and may affect audio quality too. DAZN says its data-capping options decrease stream quality; Disney+ says lower data usage produces slightly lower video and audio quality. If the picture is too soft to follow the action, try a higher quality setting while on Wi-Fi, or disable the saver temporarily if you accept the extra cellular use.

Check the phone and carrier only as secondary controls
Review usage and competing apps
If the data total is higher than expected, check the phone’s per-app mobile data usage and look for other apps using data at the same time. The NBA advises closing or limiting bandwidth-heavy applications competing with its video. Competing traffic can affect playback quality; checking it does not establish a cap on video data.
Know what device Data Saver controls
Motorola describes Android Data Saver as restricting background app data. That can help limit background activity, but it is not documented as a limit on foreground live video playing in an open sports app. Consult Motorola’s Data Saver guidance for the device-level control.

Check carrier feature eligibility
Verizon documents an app control for video streaming quality, but only for select smartphone or tablet connected-device plans. Check whether your specific plan is eligible before relying on it; do not assume the setting is available to every Verizon customer. Details are in Verizon’s video quality control instructions.
