When a Chromebook reaches its “expiration” date, it does not suddenly stop working. The date marks the end of that model’s automatic ChromeOS updates, including security updates. Schools may still choose to retire a device to meet their security or instructional requirements, but continued use, repair, resale, donation, parts recovery, and recycling are possible alternatives.

What a Chromebook “expiration” date actually means

“Chromebook Auto Update Expiration,” often shortened to AUE, is common shorthand for the end of a device’s automatic update schedule. Google’s user-facing wording is that a device will no longer receive software updates. After its listed date, a Chromebook may still turn on and run, but Google says it will not receive further automatic software and security updates. Google’s guidance on older Chromebooks explains that continued use is possible; it does not certify every model as suitable for every school activity.

That distinction matters for schools. A device can be mechanically usable yet fail a district’s security, application, or curriculum requirements. Whether to keep or retire it is therefore a school-level decision—not an automatic consequence of the date alone. The available sources establish no government-wide count of school Chromebooks reaching end of updates, so “thousands” should not be treated as a verified national total.

How to find the update date for each Chromebook

Update dates vary by model. A fleet’s purchase year, or the date listed for another Chromebook, is not a reliable substitute for checking the specific device.

  1. On the Chromebook, open Settings.
  2. Select About ChromeOS, then Additional details.
  3. Check the automatic update information shown for the device. Google’s ChromeOS device update schedule lists dates by model.

On a managed school device, the screen may say that updates are managed by the administrator. Google directs work and school users to their administrator for device-specific policy information. Administrators planning for a fleet should use the model schedule rather than apply one date to every device.

Google’s current update policy and the pre-2021 exception

Google’s administrator policy says ChromeOS devices receive 10 years of updates. Under the expanded policy announced in September 2023, devices released from 2021 onward receive 10 years of updates automatically. Eligible pre-2021 devices already in use could opt into an extension, bringing updates to 10 years from platform release after the prior update period. Google’s published schedule remains the place to check a named model’s date; do not infer its schedule from the year a school bought it.

Google cautions that some features and services may not be supported on eligible pre-2021 devices receiving extended updates. The extension is not a guarantee that every feature, service, or school application will work as before.

Options for a Chromebook at the end of updates

A school can assess each device against its requirements and condition rather than treating the update date as a disposal order.

Keep using it where school requirements allow

A working Chromebook can remain in use after automatic updates end, according to Google. Before assigning one to students or staff, the district should assess its own security and instructional requirements in light of the lack of further automatic software and security updates. Google does not determine whether a particular school’s use is appropriate.

Repair devices that remain worth repairing

Repair may make sense when the Chromebook’s condition, parts availability, repair cost, and expected remaining usefulness line up. Google’s school Chromebook repair program points to manufacturer guides with model-specific procedures, tools, replacement parts, and training.

Google reported in 2023 that more than 80% of U.S. schools participating in a Google survey were repairing at least some Chromebooks in-house. Google did not provide the survey’s sample size or sampling method in the article, so this is not a universal estimate of U.S. schools.

Resell, donate, or refurbish serviceable devices

Schools may be able to work through a reseller or refurbisher to sell or donate devices, or receive payment or service credits. Eligibility and value depend on condition, model, location, and vendor arrangements. Google’s 2024 sustainability article described CTL’s launch of a program to buy, recondition, and resell old Chromebooks at lower cost; that dated example does not establish that the program is available now or in every region. Google’s sustainability article also describes resale, parts recovery, and recycling as lifecycle options.

Recover parts or recycle devices that are no longer suitable

If a device is not fit for use or resale, parts recovery or recycling may be appropriate. Google describes these routes, but does not designate a universally suitable recycler. Schools should verify local availability, accepted devices, data-handling practices, and district requirements. Google’s consumer recycling-location guidance is U.S.-only; it should not be assumed to apply elsewhere. Google’s older-device guidance provides that consumer information.

What administrators should do before repair, resale, donation, or recycling

For managed school devices, update support and device management are separate issues. Google says administrators should deprovision devices they no longer want to manage, including devices being repaired, resold, donated, or permanently removed. An undeprovisioned device cannot be fully tested and repaired, and devices should be removed from management before handoff to a reseller or recycler. Administrators can review Google’s deprovisioning guidance.

Deprovisioning is not a substitute for the school’s data-wiping and records procedures. Confirm those steps separately before transferring a device.

A practical retirement decision for a school fleet

Evaluate devices model by model, then choose the path that meets the district’s needs:

  • Update schedule: Confirm each model’s listed date in Google’s schedule; don’t infer it from purchase year.
  • Condition and repairability: Check physical condition, model-specific repair guidance, parts availability, and repair cost.
  • School requirements: Decide whether the device remains acceptable for the intended security and instructional use after automatic updates end.
  • Management and transfer: Determine whether it is managed and complete the required deprovisioning, data-wiping, and records steps before handoff.
  • End-of-use route: Compare continued use, repair, resale, donation, parts recovery, and local recycling options based on condition and available vendors.

Google has also published cost comparisons for Chromebooks: in a 2023 announcement, it reported 55% lower device cost, 57% lower operating costs, and more than $800 in three-year operating-cost savings per device compared with other devices. These are Google’s comparisons, not independently validated or guaranteed savings for a particular school. They do not establish what an individual district should do with a device reaching its update date.
