This tutorial’s architecture uses Supabase as the managed Postgres database, not Supabase Auth: your application verifies credentials and manages sessions. That distinction matters because Supabase Auth is a separate identity service with its own JWT-based sessions and Row Level Security (RLS) integration. A successful password check is only the first part of authentication; a complete system also needs session management and authorization.

Custom authentication is a security-sensitive implementation, not the default recommendation. The Next.js authentication guide says it recommends an authentication library for increased security and simplicity. This guide explains the boundaries and decisions you must make, but the supplied documentation does not establish Sequelize-specific model definitions, APIs, or connection settings. Confirm those details against the Sequelize version and Supabase database guidance used by your project before implementing them.

Choose the architecture before writing the login form

“Supabase” can refer to either the database or Supabase Auth. They are not interchangeable. In the custom-auth architecture described here, Sequelize connects your Next.js application to Supabase-hosted Postgres, while application code owns credential verification and session lifecycle. Do not configure the Supabase Auth quickstart as well unless you intend to switch to Supabase Auth as the identity provider.

Decision Custom auth with Supabase Postgres Supabase Auth
Credential verification and identity lifecycle Your application is responsible for it. Supabase Auth provides identity features including password, magic link, OTP, social login, and SSO. Supabase Auth overview
Session state Your design must choose and manage a session, such as a server-set cookie tied to a signed token or a database session record. Provider-managed JWT-based authentication; Supabase’s Next.js setup uses cookie-based sessions. Supabase Next.js Auth quickstart
Authorization Enforce access in trusted server-side code, such as a centralized data-access layer; database policies may be added deliberately. Supabase Auth integrates with Postgres RLS, which can enforce database access policies as well. Supabase Auth overview
Security-sensitive code maintained by your team Your team owns credential and session handling and must secure and test those paths. Supabase provides the Auth product and related session machinery, but correct configuration and authorization remain necessary.

The official Supabase Next.js quickstart is an Auth setup, not merely a database connection recipe. Follow it if you choose Supabase Auth; do not treat it as a neutral starting point for a no-auth-library build.

Separate authentication, sessions, and authorization

Authentication: establish who the user is

Authentication verifies identity, commonly by checking submitted credentials. In a custom build, the server must perform that check against appropriately stored credentials. Do not treat client-side form validation or a successful database lookup as proof of identity: the trusted verification must happen on the server.

Session management: remember the result safely

After verification, the application needs a way to recognize the user on later requests. Next.js describes two broad choices: a stateless session represented in a cookie, or a database session whose identifier is stored server-side and referenced by the client. These approaches can also be combined. The trade-off is lifecycle control: database-backed records make server-side invalidation and per-session tracking explicit, while a stateless cookie avoids a session lookup but still needs a sound expiry and revocation strategy.

Authorization: decide what the user may do

Being signed in does not grant access to every record or operation. For each sensitive request, establish the current session and verify that the user is permitted to access the specific resource. Next.js distinguishes fast, optimistic checks for interface behavior or redirects from secure checks for sensitive operations; the latter must rely on trusted session data.

Plan the server-side request flow

Next.js supports handling forms with Server Actions. The documentation’s general pattern is to validate submitted data on the server, then call a database or authentication provider. For custom authentication, keep credential verification and session creation in trusted server-side code rather than exposing secrets or session-signing responsibilities to browser code.

  1. Receive credentials on the server. Submit the login form to a Server Action or another server endpoint, and validate the input there.
  2. Verify the identity. Use the application’s chosen credential-verification logic against the user record in Supabase Postgres. The exact Sequelize model and query implementation must match your installed Sequelize major version.
  3. Create a session. Choose a cookie-based stateless session or create a database session record and issue a corresponding cookie. Define expiry, refresh behavior, revocation, and multiple-device logout deliberately.
  4. Set the cookie from the server. Next.js states, “Cookies should be set on the server to prevent client-side tampering.” Configure the documented cookie options described below.
  5. Authorize each protected operation. Resolve the session on the server and check access to the requested data in a centralized data-access layer.

This is a responsibility map, not a drop-in Sequelize implementation: the available official material does not specify current Sequelize APIs, model definitions, migration commands, or Supabase connection-pool settings.

Configure session cookies deliberately

Next.js documents these cookie options for sessions. Set cookies on the server and select values for the application’s deployment and threat model.

  • HttpOnly: prevent browser JavaScript from reading the cookie.
  • Secure: restrict transmission to secure HTTPS connections in production.
  • SameSite: control when the browser sends the cookie with cross-site requests; choose a setting compatible with the application’s flows.
  • Expiration: define an expiry with Max-Age or Expires; do not leave session lifetime implicit.
  • Path: scope where the browser sends the cookie.

These flags do not by themselves solve every session risk. Your design still needs to decide how sessions expire, how they are invalidated after logout or account changes, and how refresh or multiple-device sign-out behaves. A database session can support server-side revocation by changing stored state; a stateless design needs an explicit way to handle invalidation if immediate revocation is required.

Centralize authorization around data access

Next.js recommends centralizing authorization logic in a Data Access Layer (DAL). Instead of scattering checks across page components, put the trusted session lookup and permission decision close to the operations that read or change protected data. Return Data Transfer Objects (DTOs) that expose only the fields a caller needs.

  • Use optimistic checks for interface decisions, such as whether to show a protected navigation item or redirect a visitor.
  • Repeat the authorization decision at the server-side data boundary for every sensitive read or mutation.
  • Scope database queries to the authenticated user or an explicitly authorized role/resource rather than relying on a hidden UI control.
  • Use Proxy only as an optional optimistic layer; it does not replace secure authorization at the data-access boundary.

If you also use Postgres RLS, define and test policies as an additional database boundary. RLS is a feature of the Supabase Auth integration described by Supabase, but choosing Supabase Postgres alone does not automatically mean that custom application sessions are represented in a way those policies can evaluate. Design that connection explicitly rather than assuming the identity layers are linked.

When Supabase Auth is the better fit

Supabase Auth is a relevant alternative when you want the provider to handle identity and session features rather than maintaining that lifecycle yourself. Supabase documents support for password, magic link, OTP, social login, and SSO, as well as JWTs and integration with Postgres RLS. Its Auth data lives in a special schema and can be related to application tables using triggers or foreign keys.

For Next.js server-rendered applications, Supabase’s package guidance describes @supabase/ssr as the package for cookie-based sessions in SSR frameworks and notes that it handles refresh-token rotation. Check the current Supabase server-package guidance for current package status and APIs. Using this package means the project is using Supabase Auth; it is not the custom-auth architecture above.

What to verify before implementing Sequelize

Sequelize and Supabase Postgres can be part of the same architecture, but the official material cited here does not establish version-specific ORM instructions. Before writing production code, verify the following against the documentation for your installed Sequelize major version and your target Supabase database setup:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Model, association, and migration APIs for that Sequelize version.
  • The appropriate Supabase Postgres connection method and settings for the deployment environment.
  • How credentials are stored and verified securely, including how password changes and account recovery affect existing sessions.
  • How session expiry, logout, revocation, and multiple-device behavior work in your chosen session model.
  • That authorization checks and any RLS policies protect the same intended records and operations.

Do not copy code written for a different Sequelize major version or infer connection-pool values from an unrelated setup. Those implementation details depend on the versions and deployment architecture you actually use.
