A research prototype from Cornell University and Carnegie Mellon University knits solid three-dimensional shapes from conventional yarn. Its 6-by-6 needle array and computer-controlled yarn head let it place stitches around a form rather than producing only a flat knitted sheet. The machine is an early research demonstration, not a consumer product identified for sale.
How the 3D knitting machine works
The prototype uses a block of 36 needles arranged in a 6-by-6 array. Each needle is a 3D-printed double hook attached to a brass support tube. Its front and rear sections move independently; which section catches the starting loop determines whether the machine knits or purls the stitch. A motorized head feeds yarn and moves over the array under computer control. Cornell says the researchers also wrote code for stitch types that can generate a program for a product.
In ordinary knitting, stitches are typically arranged to make a sheet. This prototype can add stitches in different directions and build horizontal layers into a solid form. The movable yarn feed and flexible stitch placement are what allow it to form more complex shapes, including overhangs. François Guimbretière, a Cornell professor of information science, described its potential expressiveness this way: “The expressiveness is very similar to a 3D printer.” That is a comparison of creative range, not a reported performance test.
What the prototype has made
Cornell reports demonstrations shaped like a C and a pyramid. New Atlas also describes wrist warmers and boxes. These examples show that the approach can produce more than a flat textile, but they do not establish a broad range of finished goods, consistent repeatability, or commercial-scale production.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Current limitations
Cornell reports that the machine operates slowly and can drop loops; yarn can also catch on the wrong needles. Those issues affect reliability as well as the time needed to make a form. The available reports give no throughput, error-rate, or other named performance statistics, and the 6-by-6 figure describes the needle layout, not speed or capacity.
The team has discussed improving robustness and potentially scaling the design by adding more needles. These are intended directions, not evidence that the problems have been solved or that a larger machine has been built.

How it compares with 3D printing and other knitting
The useful distinction is the way the machine places material: it forms an object from interlinked yarn stitches, with stitch placement in multiple directions, rather than using the process associated with conventional flat knitting. That could enable solid or overhanging forms and variation in local thickness or stiffness.
However, the reports do not provide a quantitative comparison with 3D printers or other knitting systems. They do not establish that this prototype is faster, stronger, cheaper, or better overall. Its demonstrated shape range and known reliability problems are still those of an early research project.

Could it be used for medical materials?
The researchers suggest that solid knitted structures could eventually support the growth of artificial ligaments or veins. The idea rests on being able to vary thickness and stiffness within a knitted form. This is a proposed application: the reports do not describe clinical validation, use in patients, or a finished medical device.
Is the machine available to buy?
No retail machine, price, sales channel, replacement parts, or consumer kit is identified in the reports. The project is presented as a research prototype. Conventional yarn is the material fed through it, but the available information does not establish a particular fiber, yarn weight, or brand as suitable.
