A walking 1s test is a memory diagnostic that moves a single set bit through successive positions in a data pattern. In RAM diagnostics, it is used to check for certain data-line faults, including shorts and bits stuck at 1. It is not the same as a walking 0s test, which checks the complementary pattern.
How a walking 1s test works
The test writes and checks a pattern in which a 1 shifts from one bit position to the next. IBM’s xSeries 380 maintenance manual describes its routine as sequentially turning on bits in system memory, with only one bit in each byte set to 1 at a time. That describes IBM’s implementation, not a universal requirement for every diagnostic utility.
As the 1 moves, the diagnostic checks how the memory data lines handle the changing pattern. The pattern can expose certain faults that may be missed by testing only a static value.
What faults can it detect?
Epson’s Equity LT-386SX diagnostic manual says its Walking 1’s Test checks data-line voltage for shorts and looks for data bits that are always 1. IBM describes its xSeries 380 routine as intended to identify shorts on data lines and bits stuck at 1.

These are vendor descriptions of particular diagnostics. A walking 1s result does not, by itself, establish that all memory is fault-free or identify which component should be replaced.
Walking 1s vs. walking 0s

The two tests complement each other by exercising opposite values. Exact implementations and the faults they are designed to expose vary by utility.

Are the settings and steps the same on every computer?
No. The available controls depend on the diagnostic utility and system. For example, IBM’s xSeries 380 tool let users set a memory start and end range and choose 8-, 16-, or 32-bit patterns, or ALL; its manual gives 8 bits as the default and says ALL is the most thorough setting for that utility. Those are options documented for that legacy IBM system, not standard settings on current PCs.
If you need to run a memory test, use the instructions for your computer or the specific diagnostic program. The cited manuals document vendor-specific examples, not a single procedure that applies to every machine.

The term can refer to other hardware tests
“Walking 1s” is also used outside RAM diagnostics. ON Semiconductor’s MT9M034 image-sensor datasheet describes a walking 1s pattern sent through the sensor’s digital pipeline, with the first value in each row set to 1. If you encountered the term in imaging hardware documentation, it may refer to that pattern test rather than a computer memory check.
