Apple does not formally define its products as “extended reality” (XR) in the official sources cited here. Its term for Apple Vision Pro is spatial computer, and Apple describes its experience as spatial computing: digital content and apps are placed in the user’s physical space and navigated with eyes, hands, and voice.
What does “Apple extended reality” mean?
“Apple extended reality” is best understood as a way of asking how Apple fits into the broader XR field—not as the name of an Apple-defined technology. XR is a useful umbrella term for experiences that combine digital and physical environments or immerse people in digital ones. That is a general editorial framing, not a formal definition attributed to Apple.
Apple’s own language is more specific to its product: its 2023 announcement said, “Apple Vision Pro introduces us to spatial computing.” Apple’s announcement positions spatial computing as the category Vision Pro introduces.
What does Apple mean by spatial computing?
Apple calls Vision Pro a spatial computer. Its Apple Vision Pro User Guide describes it as blending digital content and apps into a person’s physical space, with navigation using eyes, hands, and voice.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
In practical terms, the emphasis is on using apps and digital objects in a surrounding space rather than treating everything as content confined to a conventional display. Apple’s visionOS developer documentation describes apps and games in three-dimensional space while users remain connected to their surroundings.
Is Apple Vision Pro XR?
Vision Pro can be discussed as an XR device under the broad umbrella meaning of XR: its experiences involve digital content in relation to the physical environment, and some can be immersive. But that is an outside categorization, not Apple’s formal product definition in the sources cited here. Apple’s chosen label is “spatial computer,” and its platform language is “spatial computing.”

These terms overlap without being exact synonyms. XR helps place a product in the wider industry conversation; spatial computing describes Apple’s framing of computing and interaction in a spatial environment. Apple’s naming does not establish that it created or owns the broader XR category.
How does Apple’s framing relate to AR and VR?
Augmented reality (AR) generally refers to digital content layered into a view of the physical world; virtual reality (VR) generally refers to an experience centered on a virtual environment. XR is often used as a broader umbrella for such mixed or immersive experiences. Those are general descriptions, not a formal taxonomy supplied by the Apple sources cited here.

For Apple’s own description, the practical questions are how much of the physical environment remains present, whether digital content is situated in that space, and how the person interacts with it. Apple highlights eyes, hands, and voice as Vision Pro navigation methods. Its spatial-computing language centers on the relationship between apps, digital content, and the user’s surroundings rather than assigning the product a single AR or VR label.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is visionOS?
visionOS is Apple’s platform for spatial-computing apps and games. Apple’s developer materials describe three-dimensional app experiences, and its visionOS design guidance addresses designing for that environment. This developer framing supports understanding how Apple builds its platform; it does not turn XR into Apple’s formal definition.
