WordPress widgets add content or functionality to areas a theme provides, such as a sidebar or footer. How you edit them depends on your active theme: use Appearance > Widgets for a classic theme with widget areas, or Appearance > Editor for a block theme.
What are WordPress widgets?
WordPress.org documentation defines widgets as items that “add content and functionality to the widget area.” A widget area is a place a theme makes available for this content. Sidebars and footers are common examples, but a theme determines whether those areas exist, how many there are, and where they appear. WordPress: Manage WordPress widgets
Widgets can provide features such as a search box, a list of recent posts, or plugin-provided functionality. In current WordPress, the editing surface for classic-theme widget areas is block-based, so you can add blocks as well as manage older widgets that have not been converted.
Where do you edit widgets?
Check the active theme and the options under Appearance in your dashboard. The editing screen differs between classic and block themes; the Widgets menu is not expected to appear for a block theme.

The block-based Widgets Editor was introduced for classic themes with widget areas in WordPress 5.8. Block themes arrived in the WordPress ecosystem in WordPress 5.9. How to add or arrange items in a classic theme
These steps apply to classic themes that support widget areas. The area names and available controls can vary by theme and interface.

- In the dashboard, open Appearance > Widgets, then choose an available area, such as a sidebar or footer.
- Select the + control, search or browse for a block, and insert it into the area. To manage an existing third-party widget that has not been converted to a block, add or use a Legacy Widget block.
- Select the block or widget to configure its settings. Reorder items using the block controls or drag and drop.
- Save or publish the change, then preview the site to check how it looks in the theme.
To remove an item in the block-based editor, open its options and choose Remove block. In the older classic interface, removing a widget is different from moving it to Inactive Widgets: inactive widgets retain their settings for possible later use. WordPress: Block-based Widgets Editor
How block themes handle the same content
Block themes use blocks to build site parts such as navigation, headers, content, and footers. Instead of adding content to traditional widget areas, edit the relevant templates and template parts in Appearance > Editor. WordPress: Block themes

If you are switching from a classic theme to a block theme, WordPress documents an Import Widget Area option in the advanced settings for a Template Part block. This provides a way to import widget-area content into a template part; it does not guarantee that every old widget will look or behave identically after the change. WordPress: Template Part block

Widget areas belong to a theme, so the new theme may not provide the same areas or layout. In the classic interface, content from a previous theme may be listed under Inactive Widgets. For a move from a classic theme to a block theme, check the Template Part advanced settings for Import Widget Area.

Some widgets are supplied by themes and may no longer be available after changing themes. Plugins can also add widgets; plugin-provided functionality can remain available if the relevant plugin stays active. Whether a particular widget can be used or displayed in the new theme depends on its implementation and the new theme’s support. WordPress Developer Resources: Widgets – Theme Handbook

Why can’t you find Appearance > Widgets?
- Your active theme is a block theme: Open Appearance > Editor; the traditional Widgets menu is not part of the block-theme workflow. WordPress: Block-based Widgets Editor
- Your classic theme does not register widget areas: The Widgets screen may be unavailable or have no areas, because widget-area support is theme-dependent.
- The theme uses different area names or layouts: Check the available areas in the Widgets screen or Customizer; themes do not all provide the same sidebar and footer options.
- You recently changed themes: Look under Inactive Widgets in the classic interface, or use the documented import option when moving from a classic theme to a block theme.
