Many tool-using agents can be explained with the same compact control loop: check whether the goal is done, ask a model what to do next, execute the selected action, and record the result. That is a useful architectural lens—not proof that every framework has identical internals or recovery guarantees. The harder production question is what happens when a process fails between an external action and recording its completion.
The five-line idea is a useful abstraction, not a framework equivalence test
Mark Fussell’s DEV Community article, “Strip the Branding Off Your Agent Framework. It’s the Same Five Lines,” reduces a tool-using agent to a repeating sequence: determine whether the goal is complete, ask the model to choose, parse the response into an action, execute it, and append the result to history. The point is that a framework’s visible structure can vary while retaining that basic shape.
That abstraction can help explain what an agent does without getting distracted by product names. A graph, a set of cooperating agents, or a sequence of parallel actions may organize the work differently, but the system still needs to decide what should happen, carry it out, and use the outcome to choose what comes next. The article is making an architectural argument, not presenting a benchmark or a formal proof that all frameworks are equivalent.
Frameworks can add consequential capabilities around the loop: routing, parallelism, state management, observability, and human handoffs. Those features may change how an agent is built and operated even when the reason–choose–execute–remember pattern remains a useful high-level description.

Why the execution step is the recovery boundary
Executing a tool is where an agent can affect systems outside its own conversation history: a payment can be submitted, a ticket opened, or an email sent. If the action succeeds but the process crashes before recording that success, the agent may restart without knowing the effect already occurred.
A retry can then repeat the action. For a harmless lookup, that may be acceptable. For a payment or message, it can create a duplicate charge or send. The risk comes from the gap between the external system accepting an action and the agent’s own progress record reflecting it.

What durable execution changes—and what it cannot promise
Fussell’s proposed separation is to retain an agent framework while running its loop on a durable execution runtime. The runtime journals progress through model and execution steps, reuses recorded results after a crash, and resumes work that was in flight. In principle, that helps answer which steps already completed and where to resume.
Journaling does not close every failure window. If an external effect succeeds before the runtime records its completion, recovery may still retry that step. Durable execution can preserve and replay recorded progress; it cannot, by itself, guarantee exactly-once behavior at an unrelated external service. Tools that cause consequential effects need idempotency protections—such as an idempotency key for a payment API—or an equivalent deduplication contract.

Persistence depends on the framework and the mechanism
There is no universal persistence model implied by the five-line loop. For example, LangGraph’s persistence documentation describes checkpointers for thread-scoped state and stores for application data that persists across threads. It says checkpointers support recovery after interruption and fault tolerance, while stores hold longer-lived application data. These are framework persistence features; their existence does not establish that every framework offers equivalent semantics or that a checkpoint alone makes external side effects exactly once.
Google ADK’s workflow-resumability reference describes rebuilding workflow state from events and resuming interrupted work. It characterizes its contract as at-least-once and places responsibility for idempotency on node authors. Its cross-framework comparisons are claims in an evolving repository reference, not an independently tested product comparison; check the relevant framework version before relying on a particular behavior.

Product boundaries can overlap, too. LangGraph’s overview presents it as a low-level orchestration framework and runtime for long-running, stateful agents, with capabilities including durable execution, persistence, streaming, and human-in-the-loop support. It is therefore too broad to treat “framework” and “durable runtime” as universally separate product categories.

- What is saved? Identify whether the system persists events, snapshots, graph checkpoints, serialized run state, or some combination.
- How does resume work? Find out how it distinguishes completed work from interrupted work and what state it uses to restart.
- What is retried? A retry might rerun one node, a tool call, or a larger portion of the workflow; the scope affects duplication risk.
- Can a retry repeat an external effect? Determine what happens if an API succeeds but the agent’s progress record is not updated.
- Who supplies deduplication? Check whether the framework, runtime, external API, or tool author must implement idempotency.
- What failures are covered? Verify whether saved state survives only an agent-process interruption or also worker and host restarts, as relevant to your deployment.
The answers should be specific to the framework, runtime, version, and tool integration in use. A shared high-level loop is a good way to understand agent architecture; it is not a substitute for examining the recovery contract around each side effect.
