The anatomy of a computer program is how its instructions and data are organized to produce behavior. The parts you see depend on the language and the program: a C++ example may include preprocessor directives, statements, blocks, and functions, while a Python example can organize work differently.
What does “anatomy of a program” mean?
It means the arrangement of the parts that make a program do something. Those parts include instructions that carry out work and the data those instructions use. As University of Texas computer science professor William R. Cook puts it, “The meaning of a program is usually some form of behavior, because programs do things.” (Cook, Anatomy of Programming Languages, January 20, 2013.)
There is no single required anatomy shared by every program. Language rules and program purpose determine which constructs appear and how they are written. The C++ terms below describe one introductory example, not a universal checklist.
Common parts in a beginner C++ program
The University of Waterloo’s introductory C++ lesson uses several concepts to explain a small program’s structure.

Preprocessor directives
A preprocessor directive is a source-code instruction handled before the compiler processes the program proper. Waterloo’s C++ example uses an include directive to make declarations from another file available. Directives and their syntax are specific to language and toolchain conventions; they are not a required part of every program.
Statements
A statement is an instruction for the program to perform. In Waterloo’s C++ example, statements within a block execute in order. A statement’s exact syntax and behavior depend on the language.

- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Blocks
A block groups statements. In the C++ lesson, braces mark the beginning and end of a block. A function body is the block associated with that function.
Functions
A function groups behavior into a callable unit. Waterloo’s example includes a main function, while other functions can be used to divide work into named pieces. How a program begins running and how functions are declared or called vary by language and execution environment.

Function declaration versus definition
A function declaration tells the compiler that a function with a particular name will be used. A function definition describes what that function does and includes its body. The distinction matters in C++ because a function may be announced in one place and defined elsewhere. Terms such as prototype or signature may be used in related discussions, so check how a source defines them rather than assuming they mean exactly the same thing.

The broad idea—organizing instructions and data to produce behavior—applies widely, but the visible anatomy does not. For example, Stanford’s CS106A Karel teaching material uses a Python-based sample organized into main and helper functions. Its syntax and context differ from Waterloo’s C++ example; neither example defines a universal program template.

When reading an example, first identify its language and purpose. Then interpret its entry point, grouping constructs, and rules for organizing source files according to that language. A feature shown in one tutorial may be optional or absent in another language.

A practical way to read a program
- Identify the language. Look for a label or recognizable syntax before treating any construct as a general rule.
- Find the starting point. Determine where execution begins in that language or environment; do not assume every program uses C++
main. - Trace instructions in context. Read statements within their blocks and note how control moves between them.
- Follow function calls. When a function is called, locate its definition to see the behavior it groups together.
- Notice the data. Identify values the instructions read, create, or change to understand the program’s behavior.
What to remember
- A program’s anatomy is its organization of instructions and data to produce behavior.
- Statements are instructions; blocks group statements; functions group behavior into callable units.
- Declarations announce a function’s use, while definitions describe its behavior.
- Specific constructs—such as C++ braces, include directives, or
main—belong to particular language conventions, not to every program.
