An LED-backlit TV is an LCD television illuminated by light-emitting diodes (LEDs). The LEDs supply the light; the LCD panel controls that light to form the picture. In everyday product descriptions, “LED TV” usually means this kind of LED-backlit LCD TV—not a screen made of individual LED picture pixels.
How an LED-backlit TV makes a picture
The LCD panel does not produce the light for the image on its own. LEDs behind or along the edges of the panel provide illumination, and the liquid-crystal layer acts as a controllable filter, shaping how much light passes through in each part of the picture. In short: the LEDs light the LCD panel; the LCD panel forms the image. RTINGS’ overview of LED TVs explains the distinction.
Where the backlight LEDs are placed
LED-backlit LCD TVs can use different backlight layouts. The labels describe where the LEDs sit, but do not by themselves specify picture quality or the details of a particular model. LG’s comparison of edge-lit, direct-lit, and full-array systems outlines these categories.
| Backlight type | LED placement | What the label tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Edge-lit | Along one or more screen edges | The LEDs distribute light across the panel from its edges. This arrangement can allow a thinner TV, but uniformity and dimming depend on the design. |
| Direct-lit | Behind the screen, generally in a less dense arrangement than full-array systems | It describes LED placement; it does not, by itself, establish the TV’s quality or capabilities. |
| Full-array | Across the area behind the screen | Some models can control groups of LEDs as local-dimming zones, dimming some screen areas while keeping others bright. The number of zones and effectiveness vary by model. |
Manufacturers and reviewers may use these terms differently, and implementation varies. A backlight label alone does not tell you how many dimming zones a TV has or how well its local dimming works.

How LED, Mini LED, OLED, and Micro LED differ
- LED-backlit LCD: The usual meaning of “LED TV”: an LCD panel illuminated by LEDs.
- Mini LED: An LCD backlight approach using smaller LEDs, which can allow more light sources and more granular control. The image is still formed by an LCD panel.
- OLED: A distinct display approach, not another LED-backlight layout. Sony’s backlighting-systems overview treats OLED separately from edge-lit, direct-lit, and full-array backlights.
- Micro LED: Not a synonym for LED-backlit LCD. It is a direct-view, self-emissive pixel technology rather than an LED backlight for an LCD panel.
What to check when comparing LED TVs
If you are comparing televisions, look beyond the word “LED.” Check the specific model’s backlight layout, whether it has local dimming, and how that dimming is implemented. Edge-lit, direct-lit, and full-array are useful descriptions of LED placement, but a label is not a model-specific performance rating.
