Lossless compression lets you recover the exact original data; lossy compression makes a smaller, inexact representation by discarding information. The result depends on the file and method, so compression does not guarantee that every file will shrink.
How does file compression work?
A compressor transforms a file or data stream into a different representation. It can make that representation smaller by encoding patterns and statistical regularities more compactly. As a simple analogy, imagine replacing a recurring sequence with a shorter shorthand notation; a decoder can expand that notation when the data is needed again. Actual compression algorithms use more structured techniques than this analogy suggests.
Decompression reverses the transformation. With a lossless method, successful decompression restores data indistinguishable from the original input. The RFC Editor describes Zstandard as “a data compression mechanism, akin to gzip” in RFC 8878.
Lossless and lossy compression
| Approach | What decompression produces | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Lossless | The exact original data | General files or any data where every original byte matters |
| Lossy | An approximation; some information has been discarded | Some media uses where a smaller representation matters more than preserving every detail |
Lossy compression is not reversible: once information has been discarded, decompression cannot recreate the exact original. It can be appropriate for some media, but not when exact recovery is required. MDN’s lossless-compression glossary explains the distinction.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Why a compressed file may not be smaller
Compression works by finding data that can be represented more compactly. Different files contain different patterns, and methods vary in how they encode them. A lossless algorithm cannot shrink every possible input: RFC 1951, which specifies DEFLATE, documents this limitation. If the input has little exploitable structure, compression may yield little reduction or the output may grow because of encoding overhead.
There is no universal compression percentage. The reduction must be determined for the particular file and method; a result for one file is not a reliable prediction for another.

ZIP, gzip, and Zstandard are not interchangeable terms
These names refer to familiar compression formats or technologies, but they should not be treated as synonyms. A utility is a program that performs an operation; a compression method describes how data is encoded; an archive or file format determines how data and related information are packaged. Their capabilities and compatibility differ.
- ZIP is a familiar choice for handling files in archives.
- gzip is a compression utility and format; the GNU Gzip Manual describes its association with the Lempel–Ziv algorithm and its gzip/gunzip handling of compressed-file extensions.
- Zstandard, often called zstd, is a lossless format specified in RFC 8878. It is designed for files and streams and has an optional checksum for detecting corruption.
These examples illustrate compression, but one format or tool should not be assumed to open or produce another format’s files.

Compression involves trade-offs beyond file size
How data is accessed can matter alongside how compactly it is stored. RFC 8878 says the Zstandard format supports streaming uses but does not attempt to allow random access to compressed data. In other words, a format’s design can suit processing a stream without promising direct access to an arbitrary point in the compressed data.
