You can remove small amounts of solder without a hot-air tool by using a soldering iron and copper desoldering braid. Stripped stranded copper wire can serve as an improvised wick in a pinch, but purpose-made braid is more predictable—especially on delicate or valuable boards.
What you need to remove solder without hot air
- A soldering iron with a clean tip
- Copper desoldering braid, also called solder wick or desoldering wire
- Electronics flux
“Without hot air” does not mean heat-free: the soldering iron supplies the heat. Purpose-made braid is available unfluxed, with low-residue halogen-free flux, or with rosin flux. Choose braid suited to the size of the joint; no single width or iron temperature is established for every task. HAKKO describes its braid options and usage in its desoldering braid guidance.
How to remove solder with desoldering braid
- Prepare the iron and braid. Clean the iron tip. HAKKO recommends applying a little solder to both the iron tip and the end of the braid to improve heat transfer. As the manufacturer puts it, “Preliminary soldering improves heat conductance.” HAKKO’s WICK usage guidance explains this preparation.
- Apply flux to the target. Put a small amount of electronics flux on the solder you want to remove. Flux supports wicking, but it is not a guarantee that a difficult joint will clear.
- Position fresh braid. Lay a clean section of braid over the solder. Place the iron tip on top of the braid, directly above the joint, so heat passes through it.
- Let the solder wick in. Hold the iron steady only until the solder melts and flows into the copper braid. The braid’s strands and channels draw in molten solder by wicking, or capillary action; SeaPerch’s soldering guide describes wick use for small solder deposits and bridges.
- Lift iron and braid together. Remove both while the solder is still workable. HAKKO specifically advises lifting them together; holding the iron on the board too long or pulling the braid after it cools can damage the pad or PCB pattern. See HAKKO’s procedure and its usage cautions.
- Use a fresh section as needed. If solder remains, let the area cool, add flux if needed, and repeat with clean braid rather than continuing to heat a saturated section.
The braid becomes hot during use. Keep fingers clear of the working end, and avoid prolonged contact with the board: HAKKO warns that incorrect use can tear PCB patterns or damage discrete components.
Can ordinary stranded copper wire work as a wick?
As an emergency workaround for a small job, stripped stranded copper wire may act as a makeshift wick. One DIY guide describes exposing the strands and placing them against molten solder: Instructables’ homemade desoldering braid method.

This is not a manufacturer procedure or a controlled comparison with solder wick. Loose wire can vary in strand count, cleanliness, and handling, so its behavior is less predictable than purpose-made braid. If you try it, use only a small amount of solder on a noncritical task, apply flux, and lift the wire and iron together. For delicate or valuable electronics, use proper braid or an appropriate desoldering tool instead.
When to use braid, wire, or a desoldering pump

HAKKO lists braid for solder removal from PCB patterns and components, including cleanup after surface-mounted devices have been removed. That describes solder cleanup; it does not mean braid alone safely removes every mounted component. For a through-hole part, the goal is to clear solder from its leads and plated holes, then remove the component only when it is free—not to force it out while solder still holds it.

How to reduce the risk of pad or board damage
- Use only enough heat and contact time for solder to flow into the braid.
- Keep the braid still while it is hot; lift it with the iron rather than dragging it across a pad.
- If the solder does not flow, stop and reassess tip contact, braid condition, and flux instead of pressing harder or heating indefinitely.
- Let the board cool between attempts. Replace braid that is saturated with solder.
- Do not treat braid as a guarantee of component removal. If a part remains held in place, find and clear the remaining solder rather than pulling on it.
HAKKO warns that excessive pressure or dwell can lift a PCB pattern, while iFixit’s desoldering guide likewise cautions against prolonged heating. The iron and braid should leave the joint together as soon as the solder has wicked up.
