When a Three.js scene is blank, a model looks wrong, colors are off, or memory use climbs, diagnose the failing layer before changing the scene. Check browser and JavaScript errors, verify asset delivery and model validity, review color-space handling, and then inspect GPU-resource cleanup. Each symptom points to a different part of the application.
Start with errors and failed requests
Open your browser’s developer tools and check the JavaScript console first. A runtime exception or loader error can prevent a scene or model from appearing; inspect the loader’s error callback rather than assuming the problem is a material or lighting setting. The Three.js manual’s Debugging JavaScript guide covers browser debugging tools.
Also inspect the Network panel for failed model or texture requests. A missing texture may be a bad path or a hosting issue, not a rendering defect. When loading local files, serve the application from a local web server instead of opening it directly from the filesystem.
Troubleshoot a missing, distorted, or dark model
The Three.js manual recommends a practical sequence for diagnosing a model that does not appear as expected:

- Check the browser console and the model loader’s error callback.
- Open the model in another compatible viewer. If it fails there too, investigate the exported asset; if it works, focus on how the Three.js app loads or renders it.
- Try changing the model’s scale. Assets created in different applications may use different units or scale conventions.
- If the model is present but dark, add a light and adjust its position. Lighting is worth checking for a dark object, but it will not fix a missing file or a broken loader.
- Look for failed texture requests in the Network panel. Correct paths relative to the model or adjust hosting so the referenced files can load.
For most workflows, use glTF where possible. The Three.js manual’s Loading 3D Models guide says, “Where possible, we recommend using glTF (GL Transmission Format).” Its support and design for compact runtime delivery make it a practical starting point.
Fix colors by checking both ends of the pipeline
Three.js uses Linear-sRGB as its working color space. A color problem may begin with how input colors or textures are annotated, or occur when the rendered result is converted for display. Check both stages before arbitrarily increasing light intensity. The official Color Management guide explains the color-space model.

- Color textures such as PNG or JPEG files used as
maporemissiveMapshould use the sRGB color space. - Data textures such as normal and roughness maps generally use
NoColorSpace; they encode values rather than display colors. - If you use post-processing, include the appropriate output color-conversion stage so the final image is transformed correctly.
Incorrect input annotations or missing output conversion can make a scene look too dark or bright, or shift its colors. Correcting the responsible stage is more reliable than compensating with unrelated material or lighting changes.
Check WebGL capability when the scene will not render
If the page loads but the scene does not render on a particular device, check JavaScript and loader errors before investigating graphics support. Three.js’s WebGL guide shows how to use its capability addon to test for WebGL 2 availability. Treat the result as a diagnostic signal, not a guarantee of how the application will behave: the viewer’s browser and graphics environment also matter.

Stop memory growth by releasing unused GPU resources
When replacing content or unloading a level, dispose of resources that are no longer needed. Three.js’s How to dispose of Objects guide frames the lifecycle question as: “How should I manage three.js objects in my app? When do I know how to dispose things?”
- Dispose of obsolete geometries, materials, textures, and render targets; dispose of skeletons when appropriate.
- Do not assume that disposing a material also disposes its textures. They are separate resources.
- Check whether a resource is shared before disposing it. Another visible object may still depend on it.
- Use
renderer.infocounts to investigate whether resources are accumulating as your application changes content.
Interpret renderer statistics in context: some internal Three.js resources may remain counted for reuse, so a nonzero count alone does not prove a leak. Look for resources your application retains after they are no longer needed, and account for sharing before cleanup.

Make a reproducible report when the cause is unclear
If the issue persists, reduce it to a small example that demonstrates the failure. Include the browser console or loader error, relevant failed network requests, and the problematic model when possible. Separating the asset from the application setup with another viewer helps others determine where to investigate.
