The setup is intended for local testing and small-scale use—not resilient production storage: single-node, single-disk mode adds no erasure-code redundancy.
What this Compose stack sets up
The official simple Compose file defines a rustfs service. It publishes host port 9000 to container port 9000 for the S3 API and host port 9001 to container port 9001 for the web console. It mounts four named data volumes at /data/rustfs0 through /data/rustfs3, and includes a helper service that sets ownership of those volumes and the logs volume for RustFS.
The file also configures no-new-privileges, a restart policy of unless-stopped, and an HTTP/TLS-aware health check. It uses the mutable image tag rustfs/rustfs:latest; because that tag can change, choose and pin an explicit release after checking the current RustFS release information if reproducibility matters.
How do I run RustFS with Docker Compose?

Install Docker with the Compose plugin, then obtain the RustFS repository and open a terminal in its root directory. The official repository README provides the project setup and launch instructions.

Where RustFS stores data and how permissions work
The simple Compose file uses Docker named volumes for persistent data, mounted into the four /data/rustfs* paths. Named volumes are managed by Docker rather than by choosing a host directory directly; the file’s permission-helper service prepares their ownership for RustFS.
RustFS runs in the container as non-root UID/GID 10001:10001. If you change the Compose file to use host bind mounts, make the host directories writable by that UID/GID, or configure an appropriate service user. Otherwise, RustFS can fail with permission errors. The container documentation describes the non-root user and bind-mount requirement.

How do I connect an S3 client to RustFS?
Use the connection settings below for the local stack:

These settings follow the official S3 protocol guide. RustFS supports many S3 API features, but it is not a complete behavioral match for every AWS S3 or MinIO API. Check the guide and test any advanced feature against the RustFS release you plan to run.

Secure the service before exposing it
The sample publishes both listeners on the host, so do not leave its example credentials in place when exposing it beyond a trusted local machine. For applications, the S3 guide recommends IAM users or service accounts limited to the actions they need rather than root credentials.

Use unique credentials and appropriate network controls. The S3 API listener also carries administrative and internode traffic.

For non-local use, configure TLS certificates in the configured TLS directory and ensure clients trust the issuing CA. The sample file includes optional TLS configuration, and its health check switches to HTTPS when TLS is enabled.

*. Treat that as a broad example setting, not a production access policy; configure origins to fit the browsers and applications that should reach the console. -
Path-style addressing is the simpler local option. Virtual-hosted-style requests require
RUSTFS_SERVER_DOMAINSand matching DNS configuration.
When this single-node setup is appropriate
Use the simple stack for development, local S3-compatible testing, or small-scale use where you accept that this single-node, single-disk arrangement has zero erasure coding and no additional data redundancy. A running service and persistent volumes do not make it a resilient storage design. For workloads that require fault tolerance, use an appropriately designed multi-node deployment and validate its configuration against RustFS documentation rather than treating this quick-start as production guidance.
