Select an RTOS by turning the product’s timing, hardware, memory, service, safety, and lifecycle needs into requirements you can verify on the intended target. Then shortlist systems that meet mandatory constraints and test them with a representative application workload. An RTOS name, feature list, or generic benchmark cannot establish that your complete application will meet its deadlines.
1. Define the timing requirements
Start with the work the system must perform and the latest acceptable time for each response. An RTOS scheduler helps coordinate work so tasks can meet deadlines; FreeRTOS explains the relationship between events, deadlines, and scheduling in its guide to why an RTOS may be used.
For each periodic or event-driven task, record its deadline, expected execution time, worst-case execution needs, and tolerance for jitter. Include interrupt-response requirements and specify what the product should do if work misses a deadline. Distinguish hard real-time tasks, where a missed deadline may cause system failure, from tasks that can tolerate occasional delay. The label “real-time” alone does not establish that a particular application will meet its deadlines.
2. Confirm the exact hardware and software platform
Write down the processor architecture and part, board or production module, available RAM and flash, peripherals, network interfaces, compiler, debugger, boot and update path, and any required vendor support. Then verify that the RTOS has a maintained port and usable drivers for those exact components—not merely for a related processor family.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Support requirements can be specific to a product path. For example, AWS’s FreeRTOS board qualification guidance describes requirements for the connected-device qualification route, including Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or cellular capability, a required library subset, API tests, and interoperability testing. These are requirements of that qualification path, not universal prerequisites for every RTOS. The FreeRTOS user guide’s qualified-platform examples can help identify candidate boards, but qualification should not be mistaken for a guarantee that every peripheral or application integration is suitable.
3. Check memory limits and isolation needs
Estimate the full application’s memory demand, not just the kernel’s. Account for task stacks, buffers, protocol libraries, diagnostics, security features, storage, and update components, then compare the total with the target’s usable RAM and flash.

Decide whether tasks need memory protection or process isolation, and whether the processor offers the hardware support those features require. Zephyr’s system requirements identify footprint, memory allocation and protection, interrupt handling, and multicore scheduling as areas to assess. The available sources do not establish neutral, directly comparable minimum RAM or flash figures across RTOSes, so avoid choosing from a cross-product memory ranking.
4. Verify required system services
Make a list of the services the product actually needs, such as networking, filesystems, USB, cryptography, OTA updates, diagnostics, multicore support, POSIX compatibility, and other middleware. Check availability, version, license, and integration on your target; a feature being listed does not guarantee that the required driver or library works with your specific board and toolchain.

FreeRTOS documentation describes a kernel plus libraries for connectivity, security, and OTA, while its connected-board qualification path requires a defined library subset. Zephyr documents standard-library and multicore requirements. Treat these as starting points for checking the exact components and versions your application will ship.
5. Review licensing, maintenance, and support
Read the license for the exact kernel, libraries, and vendor add-ons you plan to distribute. Find out who maintains the branch, how security fixes are delivered, how long the version is supported, what vendor support covers, and whether source access or migration work affects your plans.

The FreeRTOS site describes the kernel as MIT licensed and says its LTS libraries receive security updates and critical bug fixes for two years. That is a vendor statement about its LTS libraries; confirm the terms for the specific package and release you intend to use. FreeRTOS also identifies WITTENSTEIN high integrity systems as a partner offering commercially licensed and safety-certified versions of libraries. Check the relevant commercial and support terms directly before treating them as part of your product plan.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.6. Match safety evidence to the system
For a safety-related product, begin with the applicable industry standard and required integrity level. Examine the certificate, safety manual, assumptions, covered toolchain and hardware, lifecycle artifacts, and change-impact obligations for the exact product version and deployment. A certificate for a product or component does not automatically certify your complete application or system.

QNX states that Neutrino RTOS Certified Plus is certified to IEC 61508 SIL 3 and Common Criteria ISO/IEC 15408 EAL 4+. Those credentials are specific to that product; verify the version, configuration, target, and application scope relevant to your system with the supplier and assessor. The Zephyr safety FAQ says integrators remain responsible for qualification or certification of the application and overall system, and describes the project’s safety work as evolving. Confirm the current evidence and responsibilities for any candidate.
7. Measure candidates on the target
Build a representative version of the application on the intended hardware, using production compiler settings and the libraries you expect to ship. Measure behavior under concurrent I/O and realistic fault conditions, not just an idle system or a synthetic kernel test.
- Worst-case interrupt and scheduling latency, jitter, and deadline misses.
- CPU load, stack usage, and total memory consumption.
- Startup, recovery, and response to relevant faults.
- Behavior with the required drivers, middleware, networking, and security components enabled.
No neutral, directly comparable benchmark results across FreeRTOS, Zephyr, QNX, and VxWorks are established here. Target measurements of your workload are therefore more useful for a decision than generic speed claims.
8. Compare the remaining options and their lifecycle cost
First treat non-negotiable requirements—such as a required board port, certified scope, or memory limit—as gates. Then compare the candidates that pass them using consistent questions:
| Decision area | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Timing | Does the complete workload meet worst-case deadlines and jitter limits on target hardware? |
| Hardware | Are the exact processor, board, peripherals, interfaces, and drivers supported and maintained? |
| Memory and isolation | Does the application fit the RAM and flash budgets, with the needed protection or process isolation? |
| System services | Are networking, security, storage, updates, diagnostics, and multicore features available in usable versions? |
| Safety and security evidence | Do certificates, manuals, versions, target assumptions, and lifecycle artifacts cover the intended system? |
| License and lifecycle | Are redistribution terms, support, maintenance horizon, updates, and source access acceptable? |
| Team fit | Can the team build, debug, validate, and maintain the RTOS and its integrations? |
Include development tools, tracing and debugging, support, training, certification effort, long-term maintenance, and application-porting cost in the comparison. A vendor-authored VxWorks selection article also frames RTOS selection around latency, scheduling, memory models, ecosystem, and certification needs; use any vendor comparison as one perspective, not as independent proof. No single RTOS is established as the best choice across these criteria.
