Windows 11 does not have a documented consumer Settings switch called “LowLatency.” Microsoft uses that name for a processor power-management profile described as activating during boot and app launch in documentation scoped to Windows 10. In Windows 11, the related user-facing choice is typically a performance mode such as Best Performance; CPU boost is a separate, hardware- and condition-dependent behavior.

What “LowLatency” means—and what it does not mean

Microsoft’s processor power management (PPM) framework balances performance expectations with energy efficiency. Its profile list includes LowLatency, which Microsoft describes as active during boot and app-launch time. That description appears in Microsoft’s Windows 10 processor power-management overview, not documentation establishing a selectable Windows 11 consumer setting. Microsoft’s PPM overview therefore does not show that you can enable a Windows 11 “LowLatency profile” in Settings.

The name also does not mean that Windows holds the CPU at a particular clock speed or guarantees lower input, audio, or application latency. It describes a power-management profile in a specific context, not a general-purpose latency switch.

Which Windows 11 power mode can you select?

On supported devices, Windows exposes power choices intended to trade off performance and power use. Microsoft describes Best Performance as favoring performance over power for users seeking performance and responsiveness. The available control and its labels can vary by device and interface: the power slider documentation lists Battery Saver, Better Battery, Better Performance, and Best Performance, while Windows API documentation describes installed modes as Best Power Efficiency, Balanced, and Best Performance. Microsoft’s power slider guide and mode API documentation describe these different contexts.

For the control presented on your PC, open Settings > System > Power & battery, then look for the power mode setting. Choose Best performance if you want Windows to favor performance over power consumption and the option is available. On some devices, the power slider may instead be accessible by selecting the battery icon in the taskbar and moving the slider toward performance. The selected mode is not a promise of a fixed CPU frequency; Microsoft says the user-mode selection is a vote that other system signals can override.

How CPU boost relates to latency

CPU boost is the processor’s ability to operate above its nominal performance under conditions that allow it. It is distinct from the LowLatency profile and from the Best Performance power mode. Microsoft’s detailed power and performance tuning guidance discusses boost policy in a Windows Server context; it should not be treated as a universal Windows 11 desktop recipe.

Whether boost occurs, and how much performance it provides, depends on the processor, firmware and manufacturer tuning, workload, thermal limits, and power conditions. A Windows power-mode change may influence system policy, but it cannot guarantee a particular boost clock or a measurable reduction in latency.

Best Performance versus Game Mode

Best Performance is a power choice that favors performance over energy use. Game Mode is a separate Windows feature: Microsoft says it can operate in any power-slider mode. Selecting Best Performance is therefore not the same as turning on Game Mode, and Game Mode does not require Best Performance. Microsoft’s power slider documentation covers this distinction.

What processor settings actually control

Processor power management includes several distinct settings, not one universal boost or latency control. Microsoft’s documentation for the performance-state engine describes settings including minimum and maximum performance, boost mode, energy preference, and latency hints. Their meanings and applicability differ by platform. Microsoft’s performance-state engine overview explains these options.

  • Minimum and maximum performance: Set performance-state bounds in the contexts where the platform supports and applies them; they do not guarantee a constant clock speed.
  • Boost mode: Governs additional performance behavior where supported, subject to operating conditions and platform policy.
  • Energy preference: Expresses a performance-versus-efficiency preference rather than a measured latency target.
  • Latency hints: Communicate latency-related policy information in supported configurations; their presence does not itself promise a user-visible latency reduction.

Microsoft’s cited configuration documentation does not establish that every Windows 11 PC exposes these settings to consumers or supports each one in the same way. Firmware, processor capabilities, and OEM configuration matter.

Should you use Best Performance?

Use it when your priority is responsiveness or performance and you accept the associated power trade-off. For a laptop, compare behavior on AC power and battery rather than assuming one mode will suit both situations. If the setting is absent, Windows may not expose it on that device; do not assume a hidden LowLatency switch must be enabled.

Microsoft’s documentation defines power-management behavior but does not provide an independent Windows 11 desktop benchmark showing a specific latency or frame-rate gain from selecting Best Performance or enabling CPU boost. Any measured result depends on the machine and workload, so a percentage improvement should not be assumed.
