WrapAPI’s documented workflow for turning website data into an API is to define or capture a web request, identify the values that should vary, extract fields from the response, and publish an HTTP endpoint. Its documentation lists CSS selectors and regular expressions among the extraction options. The available sources describe these features, but do not establish whether account creation, publishing, or endpoint execution currently works end to end.

How WrapAPI turns a website request into an API

An API endpoint is a URL that accepts a request and returns data in a predictable format. In WrapAPI’s Builder, the underlying request is configured first; extraction rules then identify the response data to expose. Once published, the endpoint can be called using ordinary HTTP requests. That is the documented model, not a guarantee that every website can be converted reliably.

  1. Capture or define the request. Set the URL and any query parameters, POST body, or file uploads the target site requires. Alternatively, use WrapAPI’s Chrome extension to capture requests made as you browse or submit a form.
  2. Identify parameters. Compare reference requests and mark values that should change between API calls, such as a search term or page number.
  3. Define the outputs. Specify which response values the endpoint should return. WrapAPI documents CSS selectors, regular expressions, and other extraction methods, as well as multiple output scenarios for responses that vary with input.
  4. Publish and call the endpoint. The documentation describes publishing an endpoint and calling it over HTTP. A 2017 SitePoint tutorial illustrates a flow that selects repeated article titles, previews JSON, saves an endpoint, freezes a version, generates an API key, and publishes. Its interface steps may have changed since publication.

When to capture requests with the Chrome extension

Directly entering a URL and request fields may be enough for a simple page. Capturing browser requests is intended for cases where the request is less obvious—for example, AJAX-loaded content, multi-step forms, or pages that require a logged-in session. WrapAPI says captured requests can help reveal session cookies and other request details needed to reproduce the page’s behavior.

Request capture can show how the browser communicates with a site; it does not remove the need to configure the request and extraction rules, or establish that the target permits automated access. See the WrapAPI Chrome extension page for its documented capture use cases.

What to check before choosing WrapAPI

Need Documented WrapAPI approach Practical consideration
Set up a request Enter URL, query, POST body, and uploads, or capture browser requests. Capture is most relevant when the request depends on browser interactions, AJAX, or a session.
Extract response data Use CSS selectors, regular expressions, and other extraction tools; configure multiple output scenarios where needed. Rules must match the target’s response structure. The cited sources do not establish comparative accuracy or reliability.
Host or share APIs The homepage describes community APIs and private or hosted options. Check current availability and terms for the arrangement you need; the sources do not verify present-day end-to-end operation.

WrapAPI’s pricing page lists Community as free with 30,000 API calls per month. It also lists Business – Cloud, Business – Self-hosted, and Fully managed as contact-based options, associating them with private APIs, support or SLAs, different hosting models, and custom-built APIs for the managed option. These are figures and offerings shown on the page when accessed in 2026; check current pricing and limits before relying on them.

WrapAPI Proxy is for inspecting traffic, not publishing an API

WrapAPI Proxy is a related request-analysis product, separate from the Builder workflow above. Its product page describes examining traffic from Android apps, webviews, desktop apps, and websites; viewing formatted JSON and HTML/XML; and saving or replaying requests. The page also says captures are not saved on WrapAPI’s server. These features concern request inspection and debugging, rather than creating and publishing a website-to-API endpoint. See WrapAPI Proxy.

Permissions, request volume, and sensitive data

Before building an endpoint, check the target site’s terms, your permissions, and applicable law. WrapAPI’s terms make users responsible for having the rights needed to request data from the underlying website, prohibit excessive requests to WrapAPI or other sites, and caution against disclosing sensitive or confidential information. A service that helps inspect or replay requests does not itself grant permission to access a site.
