Lockheed Martin’s 2022 plan was to connect military platforms through an open, standards-based architecture that could combine commercial 5G, cloud, AI, simulation and semiconductor technologies. The intended result was faster sharing of information across domains—not a capability the report showed as already deployed. EE Times reported the concept on May 13, 2022, drawing largely on comments from Lockheed CEO James Taiclet.
What Lockheed Martin meant by connecting defense systems
Taiclet described an open architecture—also characterized as an Internet of Things environment or a set of standards—that would let defense contractors connect their products in a 5G-enabled system. The envisioned network would link assets including aircraft, ships, satellites, submarines and ground systems, so information from one platform could inform another. Lockheed’s stated aim was to improve mission capability every six to twelve months; that was a goal, not a reported achievement or measured delivery schedule. (EE Times, May 13, 2022)
In the report, Lockheed had about ten commercial industry partners, all U.S. companies, and Taiclet said three or four had been publicly announced at the time. The named roles were:
- Verizon: 5G connectivity.
- Microsoft: cloud computing.
- Nvidia: simulation and AI support.
- Intel: semiconductors intended to resist spoofing and hacking, with customization at relatively low cost.
These are partner roles as reported in 2022, not confirmation that the agreements or roles remain current. The article did not provide comparative performance results for the companies’ technologies. (EE Times)

How the proposed network could support an F-35 and Patriot battery
Taiclet illustrated the concept with a hypothetical low-altitude cruise-missile threat. An F-35 could detect the missile with its sensors, share information over a network, and help a Patriot battery develop a targeting solution. He also suggested that a German Patriot battery could potentially be linked with an American F-35.
The example describes an intended information flow, not proof that this end-to-end capability had been fielded, tested successfully or used in combat. Nor does the report establish operational interoperability between U.S. and German forces or a NATO deployment. (EE Times, May 13, 2022)

What the hypersonic-defense example would require
The report also outlined a proposed chain for responding to a hypersonic missile: satellites would sense a launch early, AI would calculate and predict its path, high-speed links would move data to command-and-control and fire-control systems, and the network would relay information to a defensive missile battery such as THAAD or Patriot. Each handoff would need to work well enough, and quickly enough, for the next part of the chain to act on the information.
EE Times gave a speed range of 1 to 5 miles per second for hypersonic missiles, attributing that figure to its 2022 report. It did not supply a technical definition alongside the range, or report trial results, prediction accuracy, network latency or fielding status for the described defense chain. The scenario is therefore an illustration of the proposed architecture, not evidence of a demonstrated interception capability. (EE Times, May 13, 2022)

Why the architecture depends on more than connectivity
A network linking platforms across services and domains has to address several connected problems. The report’s examples point to these practical requirements, but do not establish that they were solved:
- Interoperability: systems made by different contractors and used by different forces need compatible standards and interfaces to exchange useful information.
- Secure, trustworthy computing: data and components must resist spoofing and hacking; Taiclet cited these needs when explaining Intel’s reported role.
- Network capacity and speed: sensors, command centers and fire-control systems must be able to move relevant data in time for the mission. Naming 5G does not by itself establish coverage, latency or performance in a particular operation.
- Useful data handoffs: information must pass from sensors through calculations and command systems to the people or systems responsible for a response.
- Reliable supply: the chips and other components must be available in sufficient quantities, not merely technically suitable.
These are analytical implications of the concept and scenarios described in the report, not a vendor ranking or verified assessment of system performance. (EE Times)

How the proposal related to manufacturing and supply resilience
EE Times connected Lockheed’s integration strategy to manufacturing capacity and supply-chain resilience. In the article’s 2022 context, Taiclet said Lockheed aimed to raise annual Javelin missile production to 4,000, nearly double the rate, and estimated that increasing the supply chain to meet that goal would take several years. Those were historical production plans and an estimate, not current output figures.
The report also said that at least 5,000 Javelin missiles had been sent to Ukraine and cited $3.4 billion in support, figures presented in the contemporaneous 2022 article rather than current totals. Senator Roy Blunt, as reported by EE Times, said at a May 3 Senate committee hearing that about one-third of the U.S. Javelin stockpile had been provided to Ukraine. Taiclet said each Javelin contained nearly 250 semiconductors. Together, these statements underscored the manufacturing and component demands behind defense production; they do not establish the present size of stocks, output or supply constraints. What the 2022 report establishes—and what it does not
The article documents Lockheed Martin’s stated concept, the commercial partners and roles it named at the time, and illustrative missile-defense scenarios. It does not establish the concept’s current implementation status, whether the named partner roles continue, or that the F-35/Patriot and hypersonic-defense chains achieved operational capability. Readers should treat the proposal as a plan described in a 2022 industry report, not as a status update on today’s defense networks. (EE Times, May 13, 2022)
