The most reliable way to build your funds in Dressmaker is to complete client commissions, then use off-the-rack dress sales once that option becomes available. PC Gamer describes off-the-rack sales as a way to earn money after a few commissions, but neither the exact unlock point nor a guaranteed highest-profit design is established. If you are short on gold, check the displayed material cost and sale value before committing to a design.

Start with commissions
Commissions are the story-progression route and the clearest place to begin when you need money. The official Build 403 patch note, dated September 22, 2026, says: “Fix for failed commissions not giving money (if the character accepts the commission, you should be paid)”. That supports payment for accepted commissions; it does not guarantee payment for every rejected design or every possible edge case.
Do not treat a figure shown on a commission card as money already received. The reviewed official material does not explain payment timing beyond the statement that accepted work should pay. Complete the commission and check your funds rather than planning a purchase around an assumed advance.
Switch to off-the-rack sales when available
After a few commissions, check whether the off-the-rack option is available. It lets you design and sew a dress without following a particular client brief, then offer it for sale. PC Gamer identifies this as another way to make money, but does not specify a mission, rank, or exact commission count that unlocks it.

Before using materials, compare the displayed cost with the displayed sale value. The sources do not provide enough numbers to calculate a dependable margin, so a design that looks simple is not automatically the most profitable one.
Is burlap the fastest no-cost option?
A Dressmaker.run guide result recommends basic dresses made from burlap and describes the material as free. Treat that as a community tip, not a confirmed game-wide rule: the source does not provide an official economy table or verified payout formula. Check the material’s price in your current build before sewing, especially if your funds are low.

If burlap is not free in your game, or the sale display does not make the cost worthwhile, avoid spending scarce gold on a batch of dresses based on that tip alone.
Control customer pacing with the bell
Build 403 changed how the next customer arrives: the official patch note says, “You now need to ring the bell to summon the next customer”. Ring it when you are ready to take the next commission. This gives you control over when the next customer is summoned; it does not change the commission’s stated payout.

What the available figures do—and do not—show
The reviewed sources do not publish a complete commission payout table, dress-sale formula, accessory margins, rank multipliers, or a proven fastest design. They therefore cannot support a reliable gold-per-minute estimate or a universal profit ranking. Use the in-game prices and sale display for the particular materials and designs available to you, and treat the community burlap suggestion as conditional rather than guaranteed.
