To snip part of your screen on Windows, press Windows + Shift + S, choose a capture mode, and select what you want. The image is copied to the clipboard and opens in Snipping Tool, where you can annotate or save it. For a full-screen screenshot saved directly as a file, press Windows + PrtScn.
How do I snip part of my screen?
- Arrange the window or content you want to capture. If you need to capture a menu that closes when you click elsewhere, open Snipping Tool first and set a delay.
- Press Windows + Shift + S. You can also open Start, search for Snipping Tool, and select the app.
- Choose a capture mode from the toolbar.
- For Freeform or Rectangle, click and drag around the area. For Window, select the window. Full screen captures the display. The desktop dims while you select.
- Click the Snipping Tool notification to open the capture for editing, or paste the image into another app with Ctrl + V.
Choose the right capture mode
| Mode | What it captures | How to select |
|---|---|---|
| Freeform | An irregular area | Draw around the object or area. |
| Rectangle | A rectangular region | Drag a box around the content. |
| Window | A selected window | Choose the window after selecting the mode. |
| Full screen | The entire display | Select the mode; the capture happens immediately. |
Microsoft’s instructions cover Snipping Tool on Windows 10 and Windows 11. Labels and screen details can differ on older installations. Microsoft’s Snipping Tool guide describes the available modes and controls.
How do I take a screenshot on Windows?
Use the shortcut that matches what you need to capture and where you want the result to go.
| Shortcut | Result | Where it goes |
|---|---|---|
| Windows + Shift + S | Opens the screen-capture overlay for a selected snip | Clipboard; the capture can also be opened in Snipping Tool |
| Windows + PrtScn | Captures the full screen | Saves a file in PicturesScreenshots |
| Windows + Shift + R | Opens the Snipping Tool video-capture overlay | Record a rectangular region, then stop the recording in the tool |
Microsoft documents these shortcuts in its Windows keyboard-shortcuts guide. A snip made with Windows + Shift + S is copied to the clipboard; it is not the same as using the full-screen shortcut that directly saves a file.

Where do screenshots go on Windows?
It depends on how you captured the screen. A selection made with Windows + Shift + S is copied to the clipboard, so paste it into an app with Ctrl + V. To keep it as a file, open the snip in Snipping Tool and choose Save as to select a name and location. Microsoft’s current guide says captures are automatically saved in the Screenshots folder; automatic saving and the folder can be changed in Snipping Tool Settings.
A full-screen capture made with Windows + PrtScn is saved in PicturesScreenshots. If you do not see a file after taking a selected snip, check the clipboard or open the capture in Snipping Tool rather than assuming it was saved to that folder. Microsoft documents the full-screen save location in its Print Screen shortcut guidance.

How do I save, annotate, or share a snip?
Open the capture in Snipping Tool from the notification that appears after you take it. Use the app’s controls to mark up or adjust the image, then choose Save or Save as for a file. To copy the open capture again, press Ctrl + C; Ctrl + S saves it. Snipping Tool also supports pen and highlighter markup, shapes, emoji, eraser, crop, undo and redo, and text actions for extracting text. Microsoft says text recognition runs locally on the device and can quickly redact email addresses or phone numbers. The app also provides sharing controls.
Capture a menu with a delay
- Open Snipping Tool from Start.
- Choose a delay from Delay, between 1 and 5 seconds.
- Select a capture mode and start the snip.
- Use the waiting time to reopen the menu or arrange the screen; then make the selection if the mode requires one.
For keyboard controls, Microsoft lists Alt + M to choose a mode, Alt + N to start another snip in the same mode, and Alt + D to set a 1–5 second delay. Menu labels may vary between app versions.

How do I take a screenshot without a Print Screen key?
For a selected area, use Windows + Shift + S; it does not require a Print Screen key. Microsoft also documents Fn + Windows + Space Bar as an alternative screenshot shortcut for devices without a PrtScn button. The Fn combination can depend on the device’s keyboard hardware. See Microsoft’s Print Screen shortcut guidance.
Can Snipping Tool record video?
Yes. Press Windows + Shift + R to open the video-capture overlay, select a rectangular region, start recording, and stop when finished. Microsoft’s Snipping Tool guide also describes editing a video snip in Clipchamp. This video shortcut is separate from Windows + Shift + S, which opens the screenshot overlay.

Does this work on Windows 10?
Microsoft’s Snipping Tool guidance applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11, though interface labels may differ on older installations. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; after that date, Microsoft no longer provides free software updates from Windows Update, technical assistance, or security fixes through that service. The operating system can still run, but it is no longer supported through those channels. Microsoft’s Windows keyboard tips and tricks notes the support end date.
