In Minecraft, a villager’s profession is linked to a job-site block: for example, a lectern is associated with librarians and a composter with farmers. Job sites give villagers a place to work, while trading can raise a villager’s level and unlock additional offers. To set up a particular profession, place its associated block where the villager can reach it; if the villager does not take the job, check access and whether the block is already claimed.
How villager jobs work
A profession identifies a villager’s work role and the trades associated with it. The job-site block is the workstation tied to that role. Minecraft’s developer interview describes villagers visiting profession-specific work sites; the available work-site blocks can shape which profession they take. For instance, a barrel is associated with a fisherman.
Job sites are part of the village routine, not merely decorative blocks. Minecraft’s Java Village & Pillage release notes describe villagers following a daily schedule, seeking their own beds and workstations, and restocking trades when they can work at their workstation. Those are details recorded for that release, not a guarantee that every later version preserves each condition unchanged.
How to give a villager a job
- Choose a profession. Decide which trade output you want, such as food, maps, building materials, equipment, or enchanted books.
- Place the matching job-site block. Use a block associated with the profession. For example, place a lectern for a librarian or a composter for a farmer.
- Let the villager reach the block. The villager needs to be able to get to and work at its workstation. The official sources reviewed do not establish a complete, current list of assignment conditions for every edition and version.
- Check the result. If the villager does not take the expected profession, make sure the block is reachable and consider whether another villager has claimed it. The official sources explain the job-site relationship but do not document every reason assignment may fail.
- Trade to develop the profession. Trading can give a villager experience and unlock additional offers as it levels up.
Job-site block examples
The following are verified examples from Minecraft’s official materials, not a complete profession-to-block reference for both Java and Bedrock.

| Profession | Job-site block | Example trade or role |
|---|---|---|
| Librarian | Lectern | Trades can include books and enchanted books. |
| Leatherworker | Cauldron | Leatherworker is a working profession. |
| Armorer | Blast furnace | Armorer is a working profession. |
| Farmer | Composter | The 2025 official article gives golden carrots as an example offer. |
| Fisherman | Barrel | A barrel is used as an example of a work site shaping profession choice. |
These examples draw on Minecraft’s Java release notes, developer interview, and lectern feature article. They should not be treated as a full, current cross-edition mapping.
What villager trades and levels do
Trading is how players build a villager’s trade level and unlock further offers. Minecraft’s developer interview frames trading as optional: it should be enjoyable without dictating how anyone plays. In Bedrock’s 2019 Village & Pillage release notes, villagers gain experience from trades, level up to unlock new trades, and resupply when they arrive at their job site. The Java release notes for Village & Pillage describe work-site-linked restocking, including restocking up to twice per day when villagers can work at their workstation. These are historical release records; check the behavior in the edition and version you play.

Trade examples help connect a profession to a practical goal. Minecraft’s 2025 profession article mentions golden carrots from farmers, maps from cartographers, and enchanted books from librarians. Its ranking is explicitly editorial and humorous, so the order is not an objective measure of usefulness. A lectern also has a function beyond assigning librarian work: it can hold a written book or book and quill and emit a redstone pulse when a page is turned.
Which villagers can trade?
Minecraft’s official 2025 article names these working professions: leatherworker, butcher, shepherd, fisherman, farmer, mason, armorer, toolsmith, cleric, weaponsmith, fletcher, cartographer, and librarian. It lists the nitwit separately and says nitwits cannot trade. A nitwit is therefore not a working trade profession, and placing a job-site block should not be expected to turn one into a trading villager.

Java, Bedrock, and experimental trade changes
The Java and Bedrock Village & Pillage pages document mechanics and examples from 2019; they are release records rather than current patch notes. The Bedrock notes also said smithing-table and fletching-table functionality was “coming in a later update” at that time, which should not be read as a statement of current status.
A 2023 Bedrock Preview article described experimental villager-trading changes, including biome-specific librarian enchantments. Those changes required enabling the experiment. That article does not establish whether they later became standard behavior, so do not assume biome-based librarian trades apply in ordinary current play based on the Preview alone.

Why a villager may not take or use a job
- The job-site block is inaccessible: Make sure the villager can reach the workstation and work there.
- The profession does not match the block: Confirm that the block you placed is the one associated with the role you want.
- Another villager may be using the site: Villagers seek their own workstations, and the official Java notes describe villagers claiming work sites. Check nearby villagers and blocks if the intended villager does not respond.
- You expect a special experimental trade: The biome-based librarian changes were described for an enabled Bedrock Preview experiment, not established as ordinary current behavior by that article.
The official pages reviewed do not provide an exhaustive troubleshooting matrix for every current Java and Bedrock version, so exact assignment behavior may depend on the version you are playing.
