Samsung effectively retreated from standalone cameras after it stopped introducing new models following the NX500 and phased out camera sales and marketing in the UK and Germany in 2015. It did not announce a definitive global shutdown then: in December, Samsung said it had no official plan to withdraw from the camera business. The clearest explanation is a combination of Samsung’s growing focus on smartphone imaging and declining demand for standalone cameras in those two markets.

Why did Samsung stop making cameras?

There was no single confirmed global shutdown announcement in the contemporaneous accounts. Instead, Samsung’s retreat showed up in several ways: fewer new products, local sales and marketing phase-outs, and reporting that its camera business had been reduced and moved into its mobile division.

Smartphone cameras became a priority

Samsung was investing in the camera people already carried in a phone. In a 2015 company editorial, Samsung camera executive DongHoon Jang described improving smartphone-camera function and quality so consumers could carry one mobile device. Samsung also acknowledged the physical trade-off: smartphone sensors had to be smaller than those in even compact digital cameras. That account shows Samsung’s stated product priority, but it does not establish that smartphone imaging alone caused the standalone-camera retreat. Samsung’s 2015 explanation of its smartphone-imaging focus.

Demand for standalone cameras was falling in the UK and Germany

Samsung directly cited declining local demand when it confirmed phase-outs in both markets. In the UK, it said demand for standalone digital cameras, camcorders and related accessories had declined gradually and persistently, and described the decision as local. Samsung Germany likewise said it was phasing out sales and marketing of cameras, camcorders and accessories in Germany because demand had been declining there. These statements concern the UK and Germany; they are not a quantified measure of worldwide demand. TechRadar’s report on the UK phase-out; DPReview’s report on the UK and Germany decisions.

The business was struggling to compete

The Korea Times reported in December 2015 that Samsung’s digital-camera business had been downsized and transferred into its mobile business division, and that it had struggled to compete with Japanese brands. This is contemporaneous reporting about Samsung’s business position, not a complete public account from the company of why it pulled back. The Korea Times report on Samsung’s denial and camera division.

What happened to Samsung’s camera lineup?

The NX1 launch in September 2014 showed that Samsung had invested in a premium interchangeable-lens camera system. Samsung positioned it as an expert-oriented camera, highlighting a 28-megapixel APS-C sensor, 4K/UHD video and a new NX 50–150mm lens. The launch release also said Samsung was focusing exclusively on the compact system camera segment. Samsung’s NX1 launch announcement.

The NX500 appeared in February 2015 and was described later that year as Samsung’s latest new camera model. In December, a Samsung spokesperson told The Korea Times that no new camera product had launched since February. No later model is established by the cited reports; that does not identify the exact end date for all production or sales worldwide.

Why did Samsung deny that it was withdrawing?

The apparent contradiction reflects the difference between visible operational changes and a formal global exit announcement. Samsung confirmed that it was phasing out sales and marketing in the UK and Germany, while a spokesperson told The Korea Times on December 23, 2015, that the company had no official plan to withdraw from the camera business and still had employees in the division. That denial is evidence of Samsung’s position at that time; it does not show that a sustained camera business continued afterward.

The evidence supports describing Samsung as having effectively retreated from standalone cameras over time. It does not establish one global shutdown date, or when production, warranty service, repairs, parts sales or support ended everywhere.

Does Samsung still make cameras?

The documented story is a historical retreat from standalone cameras, not a current check of Samsung’s inventory, service status or every regional market. Samsung’s camera-phone strategy is a different product direction from making dedicated camera bodies such as the NX1 and NX500. If you own NX equipment, these historical accounts alone cannot confirm present-day repair, parts or accessory availability.

What the record does not establish

  • Samsung announced a definitive global withdrawal in 2015: the cited reports instead document local UK and German phase-outs and a contemporaneous denial of an official withdrawal plan.
  • Samsung left cameras because of Samsung Pay: that was speculation, not a reason Samsung stated in the cited reporting.
  • Samsung sold its camera business or sensors to Nikon: the cited reports describe such claims as speculation, not a confirmed transaction.
  • A worldwide sales, market-share or support end date: none is established by these accounts.
