The approach is meant to shape a complete experience—not simply add features to a platform after its technical capabilities are set. Intel has described versions of this work from product research in the 1990s through later research on AI; the sources document Intel’s own account, not an independently measured company-wide impact.
What “people sciences” means in Intel’s design approach
“People sciences” is a useful shorthand for a combination Intel has described across social science, design, human-computer interaction and engineering. The starting point is the person in a real setting: what they are trying to do, what surrounds them, and how a whole product or service fits into their day.
In a 2007 Intel Technology Journal article, the company called this an “outside-in” approach. Ethnography and other social sciences help researchers understand people and their circumstances; interaction design, industrial design and human-factors engineering help translate those observations into possible experiences, products and solutions. The sequence matters: first understand use in context, then decide what technology and design should do. Intel Technology Journal, “People-Oriented Technology Design” (2007).
Intel’s historical account says its first employees with user-centered backgrounds joined in 1993 as psychologists working on human-factors engineering for interfaces in videoconferencing and communications products. Intel says its first ethnographic study followed in 1994. Those dates describe the company’s own history as presented in its technical journal.

How Intel brought research, design and technology together
Interaction and Experience Research
In 2010, Intel announced Interaction and Experience Research (IXR), a division of Intel Labs led by Intel Fellow Genevieve Bell. Intel said IXR would study how people use, reuse and resist information and communication technologies, combining social science, design and human-computer interaction with technology research. Bell described the work as asking what people would value, what would fit into their lives and what they already loved about the things they owned. Intel’s 2010 IXR announcement.
Four IXR pillars
An Intel Developer Forum factsheet described four parts of the division’s work. Together, they show how observation could connect to practical design and technical exploration:

Intel’s examples included devices that could interpret context and respond to touch, gesture or voice, as well as experimental interfaces using projected surfaces and gesture recognition. These were research possibilities and demonstrations described at the time, not evidence that the specific concepts became commercial products. Intel Developer Forum IXR factsheet (2010).
What people-centered research was meant to change
At Intel’s 2013 Developer Forum, Bell presented four themes for future mobile technology: it should feel personal, remove hassles, help people stay in the moment and help them realize their better selves. The themes shift the design question from “What can a device do?” to “How might this capability matter in someone’s life?”

Intel said the themes drew on more than 250,000 interviews across 45 countries. That is Intel’s reported figure; it does not by itself establish how the interviews were conducted or independently verify their underlying dataset. Intel’s 2013 announcement.
How the approach appears in Intel’s AI work
Understanding tasks and environments
In a 2023 Intel-authored article, research scientist Elizabeth Anne Watkins described the Intelligent Systems Research Lab’s use of sociology, anthropology and psychology to understand people’s goals, tasks and environments. The article says this work can help set technical priorities, uncover barriers to implementation and inform responsible AI governance. Watkins’s framing is that a technology’s purpose and problem-solving role arise from technical and social systems together. “How Intel Builds AI with People in Mind” (2023).

Designing useful AI explanations
Intel’s article describes explainable AI research focused on what people need to do with an explanation, rather than treating explanation as a technical output alone. One example concerns birders using an AI app: a useful system should help people understand how to take a picture that lets the app recognize the bird they want to identify. In this framing, the explanation is valuable when it helps a person complete the task.
People as collaborators with AI
The same article describes an approach in which domain experts teach systems as part of their work, rather than placing all data annotation before deployment with third-party workers who may have limited visibility into the system. This is Intel’s account of its approach; it is not proof that expert-in-the-loop teaching is always preferable for every AI system or task.

What Intel’s stated responsible-AI commitments add
Intel’s current Responsible AI page describes multidisciplinary review across the AI lifecycle and lists commitments concerning human rights, oversight, transparency and explainability, safety and reliability, privacy, equity and inclusion, and environmental protection. These are Intel’s stated principles and commitments; the page should not be read as independent verification that every system or outcome meets them. Intel Responsible AI.
What the history shows—and what it does not
Across these dated accounts, the setting and the role assigned to people change: early work emphasized usability and ethnographic study; IXR connected fieldwork and design to context-aware experience concepts; later AI accounts focus on tasks, explanations, collaboration and governance. This is a useful way to understand the evolution of Intel’s descriptions, but the sources do not establish that a single unchanged program ran continuously across those periods.
The evidence supports a clear description of Intel’s stated method: study people in context, involve social-science and design expertise, and use what is learned to guide technology choices. It does not provide an independent measure of how much this approach improved Intel products or platforms overall.
