If it reaches the Apple logo but will not finish starting, use recovery mode and choose Update before considering Restore. These symptoms alone do not identify the cause.
1. Force-restart the iPad
Use the sequence that matches your iPad. A force restart does not require the screen to respond. Keep holding the required buttons until the Apple logo appears.
iPad without a Home button
- Quickly press and release the volume button closest to the top button.
- Quickly press and release the volume button farthest from the top button.
- Press and hold the top button until the Apple logo appears.
iPad with a Home button
- Press and hold the Home button and the top button together.
- Release them when the Apple logo appears.
Apple’s instructions for an iPad that does not respond provide these model-dependent button sequences. If the screen stays black, move on to the power checks.
2. Check the charger and allow time to charge
Connect the iPad to a working USB power adapter or another supported powered source with a USB charging cable. Apple says a device that will not turn on might need up to an hour of charging; this is a conditional wait, not a guarantee that charging will fix the problem.

- If no charging indication appears, try a different cable and adapter, and confirm that the power source works.
- Check that the iPad is not too hot or too cold; temperature can affect charging.
- Use accessories compatible with your particular iPad. The correct connector depends on the model.
See Apple’s charging troubleshooting steps. If the iPad still will not turn on after these checks, or the display changes to an Apple logo or colored screen, follow the relevant branch below.
3. If startup stops at the Apple logo or a colored screen
A black display is different from an iPad that shows the Apple logo, or a red or blue screen, but does not finish starting. For a startup stall, connect the iPad to a Mac or PC and use recovery mode for that model. Apple’s unresponsive-iPad guide links to the recovery steps.

Choose the computer app
- Mac with macOS Catalina 10.15 or later: use Finder.
- Mac with an older version of macOS: Apple says to use iTunes.
- PC: use Apple Devices or iTunes.
Choose Update before Restore
When the computer offers the options, try Update first. It is the troubleshooting choice to attempt before Restore when addressing a startup problem. Apple’s guidance for update or restore problems explains the recovery process.
Restore erases the iPad’s data and settings while reinstalling iPadOS. Do not choose it without understanding that consequence; try Update first when appropriate.

If the software download takes more than 15 minutes and the iPad exits recovery mode, let the download finish, then repeat the recovery-mode steps. Apple describes this recovery-download behavior in its update and restore instructions.

Contact Apple Support or an Apple Authorized Service Provider if the iPad still will not start, recovery mode cannot be completed, or a required button is broken. Apple identifies service as a next step for persistent startup failures or buttons that prevent recovery mode.

The symptoms do not establish whether the cause is a depleted battery, display damage, a charging-port problem, or another hardware fault. Apple’s troubleshooting steps do not determine repair cost, eligibility, or turnaround for an individual device. Avoid treating a particular component as failed without a device-specific assessment.
