The iPad’s “Cannot Verify Server Identity” alert means it could not confirm the identity certificate presented by a server. It is a security warning, not proof that the server is malicious—and it is not a warning to dismiss automatically. Note the app and server named in the alert, then use the steps below to determine whether the issue belongs to a website, an email provider, or a work or school administrator.

What the alert means—and what to do first

A server certificate helps identify a server and support a secure connection. The iPad checks whether the certificate can be trusted; if it cannot validate the certificate’s trust chain, a service can return an error. Apple describes this behavior in its certificate management guidance.

The alert can appear in Safari, Mail, or another app. The wording alone does not identify the app, server, or cause. Read the alert carefully and record the exact server name and the app showing it. If the name is unfamiliar, unexpected, or does not match the service you intended to use, cancel the connection and check with that service’s operator or your administrator before proceeding.

Do not accept an unfamiliar certificate or disable SSL/TLS just to stop the message. In Safari, check that the website address is correct; Apple advises against entering personal or financial information on a website that is not encrypted. See Apple’s guidance on Safari security warnings.

Work through the safe checks

  1. Identify where the alert appears. Note whether it is in Mail, Safari, or another app, and copy the exact hostname shown in the alert. Check whether the name matches the service you were trying to reach.
  2. Confirm the iPad can connect to the internet. If the warning appears in Mail, check with your email provider to see whether its service is experiencing an outage. Apple includes connectivity and provider status among its Mail troubleshooting steps.
  3. Check whether the issue is limited to one app or service. Note whether the warning affects just one mail account or website, or multiple services. Also note whether it occurs on one network or across networks. These comparisons can help the responsible provider or administrator investigate; they do not, by themselves, establish a cause.
  4. For a Mail-only warning, contact the email provider or administrator. Ask them to confirm the correct incoming and outgoing server names and the certificate configured for those servers. A certificate renewal or configuration change is one possible server-side issue; a Plesk support article documents a renewal-related scenario, but it does not show that this is the cause in every case.
  5. For a work or school service, check with IT. Ask whether the certificate is expected and whether your organization requires a managed certificate or profile on the iPad. A self-signed or otherwise untrusted certificate may not validate automatically; only proceed if the responsible administrator confirms that the certificate and server are legitimate.
  6. For a Safari warning, verify the address directly. Make sure the hostname is the one you intended to visit. Do not enter sensitive information while Safari cannot establish a trusted connection.
  7. Before changing or deleting a Mail account, consider downloaded messages. Apple warns that removing or changing an account can remove messages downloaded to the iPad; backups preserve mail settings, not the email itself. Consult Apple’s Mail troubleshooting guidance and contact the provider before making account changes.

What may be causing it

The alert can occur when the iPad cannot validate a server certificate’s trust chain, when a certificate is self-signed, or after server certificate configuration changes. Apple documents the general trust-chain validation issue in its certificate management guidance; the Plesk article above describes one possible mail-server renewal scenario. Without the affected app, hostname, and server details, the alert alone cannot identify which explanation applies.

When you contact support, provide the exact hostname, the app where the warning appears, whether other services are affected, which network you were using, and whether the provider or administrator recently changed or renewed a certificate. This gives the person responsible for the server useful context without asking you to bypass the security check.

Who can resolve a certificate problem?

If the certificate or server configuration is wrong, the fix usually belongs to the email provider, website operator, or organization’s IT administrator. Apple advises contacting the email provider or system administrator when Mail account errors persist. A generic iPad accessory, replacement device, or unrelated app purchase does not address certificate validation or server configuration.
