Why does my iPhone randomly vibrate?
Apple defines haptic feedback as vibration you feel when performing some actions, such as touching and holding an icon on the Home Screen. iPhone can also vibrate for calls, messages, calendar events, reminders, and app notifications. A brief vibration may therefore have a software explanation even when you did not notice an alert.
Before changing settings, note when the vibration occurs: while typing, with the screen locked, at a recurring time, or near a notification. Recording the time and what the phone was doing can help you connect it to an alert or interaction setting.
How do I stop my iPhone from vibrating for no reason?
Check alert vibration patterns
- Open Settings > Sounds & Haptics.
- Review the haptics behavior and the vibration pattern for relevant categories, such as ringtone, text tone, calendar alerts, or reminders. Apple says alert sounds have paired vibration patterns, which can be changed.
- If you recognize the alert category, change its pattern or haptics behavior rather than disabling vibration everywhere.
Check keyboard and system feedback
If the vibration happens during typing or while interacting with the interface, open Settings > Sounds & Haptics. Check Keyboard Feedback > Haptic and System Haptics. These controls affect interaction feedback, not every app alert.

Review app notifications
Open Settings > Notifications and inspect apps that could be sending alerts around the time of a vibration. Also check the suspected app’s own notification settings. If you identify the source, adjust that app’s notifications rather than changing unrelated haptics.
Understand what Silent Mode does
Silent Mode stops ringing and alert sounds, but it does not necessarily stop vibration. Apple notes that an iPhone in Silent Mode may still vibrate. If your goal is to silence sound and vibration, adjust the relevant haptics setting as well.

Use the global vibration switch only as a short test
To test whether vibration itself is involved, go to Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Vibration and turn Vibration off briefly. This is a broad setting: it disables vibration globally, including vibration for earthquake, tsunami, and other emergency alerts. Turn it back on after the test if you want emergency-alert vibration enabled.
What software steps should I try next?
Force-restart the iPhone
Force restart the phone using the button sequence for your iPhone model. The steps differ by model; follow Apple’s Force restart iPhone instructions. A restart is a reasonable troubleshooting step, but Apple does not promise it will fix unexplained vibration.

Check for an iOS update
Go to Settings > General > Software Update and check whether an update is available for your device. Install an update if appropriate, following Apple’s Update iOS on iPhone guidance. An update may address software issues, but it is not a guaranteed cure for this symptom.

If the phone has physical damage or the vibration persists without an identifiable alert or interaction, contact Apple Support or an Apple Authorized Service Provider for device-specific assessment. The symptom alone does not establish that a vibration component has failed.
