Windows loudness equalization is an optional playback effect that reduces perceived differences between louder and quieter sounds. To find it, open the selected output device’s properties and check its Enhancements tab—but the control is available only when that device’s driver and configuration expose it. If it is missing, that alone does not mean Windows is broken.
What loudness equalization does
Microsoft describes the loudness equalizer as an effect that levels audio output so louder and quieter passages are closer to an average perceived loudness. It may suit listening where you want less variation in apparent volume, but its result can depend on the device, driver, app, and audio material.
It is not the same as a conventional audio equalizer. Loudness equalization targets perceived level differences; a frequency equalizer changes the balance of frequencies using filters. Microsoft documents these as separate audio effects: Audio signal processing modes.
How to find Loudness Equalization in Windows 11
- Open Settings > System > Sound.
- Select the output device you are listening through.
- Under Advanced, select More sound settings to open the classic Sound dialog. Microsoft documents this route in its Windows sound troubleshooting guidance.
- In the Sound dialog, select the relevant playback device and choose Properties.
- If an Enhancements tab is present, look for Loudness Equalization, select it, then apply the change.
The last step is conditional: Windows does not show this checkbox for every output device. Microsoft Q&A guidance describes this classic route, but it should not be treated as a universal Windows 11 interface: How to enable sound equalization in Windows 11.

Why the setting may be missing
The available processing controls depend on the audio device, its driver, and the PC maker’s configuration. Microsoft explains that drivers report which processing modes they support, and not every mode is available on every system. A missing checkbox therefore does not, by itself, indicate a Windows fault.
- Check the selected output. Properties belong to a particular playback device. A different output may expose different controls.
- Look for the PC maker’s audio software. Some configurations place audio processing in an OEM app rather than the classic Enhancements tab. Microsoft Q&A community guidance mentions Realtek Audio Console and manufacturer audio apps, including Dell, Waves, HP, and B&O. Availability and controls vary by exact PC model; consult its manufacturer support page and supplied driver information: Microsoft Q&A guidance.
- Do not assume another app has an equivalent control. An OEM utility may offer a similarly named volume-leveling effect, but the available evidence does not establish a complete list of current Windows 11 models or apps that do.
Microsoft’s technical explanation of driver-supported processing modes is available in Audio signal processing modes. For device-specific instructions, use the PC maker’s support page for the exact model rather than installing an unrelated driver or audio utility.

Windows controls and manufacturer apps: what to check

Troubleshoot audio problems involving enhancements
If sound problems began or seem related to processing effects, turn enhancements off as a diagnostic step. Microsoft recommends this approach in its audio troubleshooting guidance.
- In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Sound and select the affected output device.
- Set Audio enhancements to Off if that control is available. In the classic device Properties interface, use Disable all enhancements if offered.
- Test playback again. If the problem clears, re-enable only the controls you actually want and check whether the issue returns.
- If the problem remains, verify that Windows has the intended output selected and that the device is enabled. Then update or reinstall its audio driver using Windows or the PC maker’s support instructions. If Windows cannot find a suitable driver, Microsoft advises checking with the device manufacturer.
Windows 10 note
These instructions focus on Windows 11. Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Interface details can differ by release and driver, so Windows 10 users should treat the Windows 11 paths above as inapplicable where their menus differ and consult Microsoft’s current audio troubleshooting page for supported guidance.
