A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11If Excel formulas recalculate slowly, first make sure multithreaded calculation is enabled. In Windows desktop Excel, go to File > Options > Advanced, scroll to Formulas, and select Enable multi-threaded calculation. Leave Use all processors on this computer selected as your starting point. More threads do not guarantee faster results: Excel can run only independent, thread-safe calculation work in parallel.
Enable multithreaded calculation in Excel for Windows
Microsoft says multithreaded calculation is enabled by default in the Windows desktop setting, with all processors selected by default. If a workbook is slow, verify the options rather than assuming the thread setting is off.
- Open File > Options > Advanced.
- Scroll to the Formulas section.
- Check Enable multi-threaded calculation.
- Under Number of calculation threads, choose Use all processors on this computer for a baseline. Choose Manual only if you have a reason to limit Excel’s processor use, such as leaving capacity for other programs.
Microsoft’s support page says the manual field accepts up to 1,024. That is a configurable thread ceiling, not a recommendation to enter a large number or an indication that your computer has that many cores. Microsoft’s separate Advanced options page says Excel supports up to 64 processor cores; processor-core support and the configurable thread ceiling are different measures, and product limits can vary by version and deployment. See Microsoft’s recalculation and thread settings and Advanced options.
The Windows route above is not a universal set of steps for Mac or Excel for the web; the cited Microsoft guidance does not establish their current controls.

Why more calculation threads may not make a workbook faster
Excel can calculate independent parts of a workbook concurrently, but formula dependencies limit that opportunity. When one formula needs the result of another, Excel must respect that calculation order. A workbook with long dependency chains may have less parallel work available than one with many independent formulas.
Some functions and operations also constrain multithreading. Microsoft’s performance guidance identifies single-threaded cases including INDIRECT, some uses of CELL, cube functions, VBA or COM user-defined functions, data tables, and circular references. Volatile functions such as NOW(), TODAY(), RAND(), OFFSET(), and INDIRECT() can trigger recalculation each time Excel recalculates, even when their direct precedents appear unchanged. Exact behavior can depend on arguments and workbook context.

These are reasons to inspect the workbook, not rules to replace a function blindly: a rewrite must preserve the workbook’s intended results. Microsoft’s explanations of calculation performance, multithreaded recalculation, and Excel recalculation describe these constraints.
Reduce unnecessary formula work
When the thread option is already enabled, workbook design is often a better place to look than the thread count. Microsoft flags repeated calculations, oversized array-formula ranges, and overly complex mega-formulas as potential performance obstructions.

- Look for the same expensive expression recalculated in many formulas. Where it makes the logic clearer and avoids repeated work, calculate it once in a helper row or column and reuse the result.
- Limit array formulas to the ranges they actually need instead of calculating across oversized ranges.
- Review long, complex formulas and consider whether intermediate results can be made explicit. A simpler structure can make repeated work easier to spot and may give Excel more opportunity to optimize.
- Check whether volatile functions or single-threaded operations are being used more widely than the workbook requires. Replace them only when an alternative preserves the workbook’s behavior.
Excel’s calculation chain records formula order and can be retained in a workbook, helping Excel avoid building that order from scratch on every load. Microsoft describes this in its calculation chain metadata guidance.
Choose calculation mode based on the problem
Automatic calculation updates affected formulas as inputs change. If a large workbook recalculates so often that editing becomes disruptive, Manual calculation can defer that work until you request it. This can improve responsiveness while editing, but displayed results may be stale until recalculation. Recalculate before relying on values.

In desktop Excel, calculation mode changes affect all open workbooks, not just the workbook you are editing. Use Manual as a deliberate editing workaround, not as a fix for a slow full calculation. Microsoft’s calculation settings guidance explains the controls.

First determine whether the issue is frequent recalculation or a slow calculation when one is requested. Microsoft recommends timing full calculation, ordinary recalculation, individual sheets, and ranges to identify where the time is going. Compare like with like: repeated runs can be faster because Excel reuses calculation order and caches.

- If editing pauses after many input changes, test whether unnecessary recalculation is the main issue.
- If a full calculation remains slow, narrow down the costly sheet, range, formulas, or operations before changing settings.
- If the computer is paging data to disk, additional RAM may address that constraint; more memory is not a guaranteed calculation-speed improvement.
A faster processor or more physical processors can help a calculation-bound workbook, but the benefit depends on its formulas and available parallel work. Microsoft notes that hyper-threading commonly adds only a small performance gain. Treat a CPU upgrade as a workload-specific decision after checking formula design and settings, not as the automatic next step.
Check for a multi-session deployment limit
Microsoft documents a default limit of two calculation threads for Microsoft 365 Apps in specified multi-session environments, including Azure Virtual Desktop multi-session and certain named Windows Server deployments. This is not a general limit for desktop Excel. If the workbook runs in one of these environments, ask the administrator to verify the applicable deployment guidance; do not change enterprise policy or registry settings based on a general desktop tip. See Microsoft’s article on heavy Excel workloads in multi-session environments.
