When Excel’s UNIQUE function fails, start with the visible symptom: #NAME? usually calls for checking Excel support and formula spelling, #SPILL! means the returned results cannot fill their output area, and #REF! after refresh can point to a closed source workbook. Work through the checks below in that order; the exact formula, error, Excel version and platform determine which fix applies.
1. Confirm your Excel version supports UNIQUE
UNIQUE is not available in every Excel edition. Microsoft’s current support page lists Excel for Microsoft 365, Excel 2024 and Excel 2021, along with specified Mac and mobile versions and Microsoft365.com. Compare your actual edition and platform with Microsoft’s UNIQUE function support information before troubleshooting the worksheet. If your version is not listed, the function may not be recognized.
2. Check the formula name and arguments
Microsoft documents the syntax as =UNIQUE(array,[by_col],[exactly_once]). The array argument is required; the other two are optional. by_col controls whether Excel compares columns instead of rows, while exactly_once returns only items that occur exactly once when set to TRUE. See Microsoft’s UNIQUE function reference for the documented syntax.
If Excel shows #NAME?, check that the function is spelled UNIQUE and that the arguments are entered correctly. Microsoft lists misspelled or unrecognized names among common causes of #NAME?; unsupported Excel versions can also fail to recognize newer functions. Correct the function name or syntax before wrapping the formula in error-handling functions, which can hide the underlying problem. Microsoft’s guidance for correcting a #NAME? error explains other name-related checks.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
3. Fix a #SPILL! error
UNIQUE can return several values. When it is the final result in a formula, Excel places the results in neighboring cells in a spill range. If any cell in the required output area is obstructed, Excel displays #SPILL! instead of returning the full array. Select the error cell to see the intended spill range, then clear or move any contents blocking it. Microsoft’s dynamic-array and spill behavior guide describes how these results occupy worksheet cells.
Move UNIQUE outside an Excel Table
Excel does not support spilled array formulas inside Excel Tables. Put the formula in ordinary worksheet cells outside the Table. If that layout is unsuitable, you can convert the Table to a range if appropriate for your workbook. Microsoft’s #SPILL! troubleshooting page covers Table-related spill errors.

4. Check linked workbook availability for #REF!
If the formula uses data from another workbook and returns #REF! after refresh, check whether that source workbook is open. Microsoft says dynamic arrays linked between workbooks have limited support: they work only while both workbooks are open, and closing the source workbook can cause linked dynamic-array formulas to return #REF! when refreshed. Open both workbooks and refresh the formula; see Microsoft’s dynamic-array behavior guidance for this limitation.
5. Check compatibility when sharing the workbook
If your formula works for you but behaves differently for someone else, compare the Excel versions and platforms in use. Microsoft explains that older Excel versions that are not dynamic-array-aware do not resize dynamic-array formulas and do not show a spill border. Use Excel’s Compatibility Checker when sharing a workbook with people who may be using older versions; Microsoft’s dynamic-array guidance describes the behavior in older Excel.

Use the error as a diagnostic clue
| What you see | First checks |
|---|---|
#NAME? |
Confirm your Excel edition supports UNIQUE, then check the function spelling and syntax. |
#SPILL! |
Select the error cell, inspect the intended spill range and remove obstructions. Check whether the formula is inside an Excel Table. |
#REF! after refresh |
If the formula links to another workbook, confirm that the source workbook is open. |
| No error, but another user sees different behavior | Compare Excel versions and platforms; check whether the recipient’s Excel supports dynamic arrays. |
These codes narrow the search but are not proof of a single cause. If the checks do not explain the problem, gather the exact formula, full error message, Excel edition and build, platform, and whether the formula refers to another workbook. Those details are needed to identify what is happening in a specific file.
