You can customize a conversation’s appearance on a Samsung phone, but the steps depend on whether you use Google Messages or Samsung Messages. Google Messages offers per-chat color themes and optional wallpapers; Samsung Messages documents background color or wallpaper customization, with bubble opacity and text contrast on some devices.
First, identify your messaging app
Open the app you use to send texts and check its name: it will be Google Messages or Samsung Messages. The available controls differ, so follow the instructions for the app on your phone rather than relying on the phone brand alone.
Samsung’s U.S. support guide scopes its Samsung Messages instructions to devices running Android 11 or older. It also says Samsung Messages will be discontinued on Galaxy devices running Android 12 or newer starting July 6, 2026. Change a conversation’s theme in Google Messages
- Open Google Messages and select the conversation you want to customize.
- Tap the recipient’s or group’s name in the top bar, or tap More in the upper-right corner.
- Tap Chat theme.
- Choose a color theme from the palette, then tap Apply.
- To add a wallpaper, choose a photo or a preset wallpaper category, then tap Apply.
- To restore the original appearance, open Chat theme, choose Reset to default, and apply it.
Google Messages applies the theme to that conversation. Google Messages Help says, “Chat theme changes are only visible to you.” The other person does not see your theme change. Google Messages Help: Customize conversations

The names or availability of menus may vary by phone or app version; if you do not see Chat theme, check for an app update or use the customization options available in your installed version. Google also describes per-chat bubble and background customization on its Google Messages product page.
Customize a thread in Samsung Messages
- Open Samsung Messages and choose a conversation.
- Tap More options (the three vertical dots).
- Tap Customize wallpaper or Customize chat room, depending on the device.
- Select an image from Gallery or choose a color to change the conversation background.
- If your device offers them, adjust bubble opacity or text contrast.
Samsung documents this as setting a custom wallpaper or background color for an individual message thread. It is not a universal control for picking any bubble color; opacity and text-contrast controls are available only on some devices. These settings change how a conversation looks in your messaging app; they do not change the message itself or guarantee a different appearance on the recipient’s phone.
